Hi all, I've been outside a lot during the lockdown digging up our entire garden, and this sunny weather has got me thinking about a nice jolly down to the seaside once this is all over. Which in turn got me thinking about what vehicle I might mince on down to the beach in. Obviously it would have to be a Jolly! I've always liked how ridiculous they are, but have always thought it would be nigh on impossible to build one today. Am I right in thinking that if I were to retain enough points on the DVLA system it would be possible? I'm just not sure where the DVLA would stand on having no sides to the car! Just buy scrap money small hatchbacks with minimal MOT, hack the roof and doors off, send docs to DVLA saying "convertible" and drive it till they come back, then weigh it in.

On a more sensible note, I saw a series landy where the doors had been replaced with an A-frame of box section steel, which picked up on The hinges and lock, that’s the doors sorted, now what about the roof?
If you leave the gutters there and completely strip the skin how would they view that?

I think it's a regular thing on jeeps in the US as well... |

Being involved with fiats all my life and have had (and build) different jolly's , all i have to say is , depends how far you live from the beach. Its a very impractical automibile. A bigger car with somesort of roof will always be more practical. At the moment there's one in my watchlist on the dutch version of evilbay thats really rocks my jolly... What about if you used a herald - with its own chassis you could modify the body.
The roof unbolts too so you can put it back together.

So how does this DVLA system work?
Since there have been Jolly versions of several cars ( Fiat , Renault, Mini ) and they are well documented, could you turn a regular version of one of those cars into a good recreation of one of those and argue the end result is not modified from that spec?

Also, there was a Fiat 126 based kit in the UK, with a open fiberglass Fiat 500 body on it.
It should be really easy to turn that into a Jolly...
(all the external chromed tubing for a 500 Jolly is being reproduced in Italy...)

Almost anything is possible within the IVA and UK registrations process - what prevents people going down that route is the time, effort and bit of extra money it takes to do it properly and to a specified standard.
126 based kit - the 500 and 595 Barchetta - I recall there also being a space frame version using a Triumph 595 (955i) triple bike engine but I don't think much came of that project.
