My Vauxhall Carlton has been laid up in a dry garage for 12 years without being started. Someone told me the automatic gearbox won't be any good now as it needs the fluid pumped around it to keep the clutches in good condition.
Will the box be no good if was to start using the car again?

Dip and check fluid if it looks or smells burnt drain fluid and re-fill. If in doubt refer to owners manual. If there's no leaks and its held fluid and shows a level on dipstick I'd just run it up to operating temperature.

Hi, It's not so much the clutches that suffer more that the seals dry out and don't seal so well if at all, and there are a lot in there.

I’d change the oil - it degrades with time as well as use.
