This is a bit of a hypothetical really, but I can't get it off my mind. I've got an older Ranger that's been uted, and because of that the bum comes out on the corners quite pleasingly. The 2.5td engines in these things are pretty renowned for not liking high RPMs, dying if they even think about overheating, and being pretty untuneable at a reasonable cost. If I continue sliding it around, the first one will likely lead to the second, while I get a greater hankering for the third.
So, to my question - What would be a good replacement? I'd ideally like to keep it fairly similar, eg. 2.5l diseasle, probably a 4-pot, and hopefully without much/any electrickery going on, or at least with a simple stand-alone ecu so I don't need to do too much wiring. If it can be obtained with a factory 4x4 transmission, all the better.
I'll need to be able to get it through an MOT, so I'd guess it'll need to tolerate a cat, or have a screwdriver applied to the back of the pump once a year...
So far, the drivetrain from a SSangyong Musso seems like a fair shout, apart from the fact it's a 2.9 and a 5-pot, so might not fit, but it's a Merc lump and has a good reputation. The Thai lads that drag race pickups love their Izuzus, so that's probably worth a look too, but what do you lot think?

Assuming yours is the early Mazda based ranger it’s about 100bhp The later ranger (06ish onwards) engine is 143bhp as a 2.5,and there a 3L version of same lump The 2.5 pulls well in the 2wd version for sliding about ......

That's not a bad shout, I've had a tweaked-up 300tdi, which was pretty hillarious. I'd rather a less-landroverish gearbox, with 2wd etc, but I suppose that's not an insurmountable obstacle.

Those engines are pretty good, and they take a tune well. Are they on a standalone ecu, or would I need half the loom etc? I'm not sure that I wouldn't end up at a point where I might as well swap the trayback and tyres onto a whole new truck, but hey I'm not sure that rational and logic is as high a motivation as it might be round here...

I work on this sort of stuff day in day out and I don't think such an engine exists. Whether they're reliable or not seems to be down to voodoo or sheer luck rather than maintenance.

The later Mazda/ranger option is the easiest and most cost effective option, given it bolts in and the power gain you will get. With a map (and maybe a bigger intercooler) you’re talking 200hp and nearly 300ft/lbs.
As long as it’s on aftermarket replacement head and you bin the EGR system (especially the cooler) that’s as reliable as anything else comparable really.
You need the ECU, the immobiliser unit, keys and transponder to make it run, as well as the engine loom. Some other functions are also needed to make things work, like the key click input sensor for key programming. Still ideally you need a full donor loom to pick apart.

Someone on here put a merc OM606 in a landy recently, have a look at that? Is the bay such a tight fit? They put V8's in there after all. Isuzu V6 possible option?
