Getting a new cat fitted next week. Does anyone know of an online scrap place? Or somewhere in North yorks that buys them?
It is worth asking for it from the garage when the new one is fitted?
Seems a shame to leave at the garage if there worth a few quid.

there will be somebody in your local town who buys cats, by all means ask the garage for it back but don't be suprised if they say no, they will be wanting to cash it in as well.
if its an original fitment cat, it will be worth good money, you might need the numbers off it when asking local dealers
I recently took a cat to EMR metals in Salford, Mcr, I got £90 for it.

yes definitely keep it and sell it on yourself, oem cats are worth a lot.
you'll often find a local guy on facebook marketplace, otherwise hunt for your local metals recycling yard, they'll look up the code on the cat and give you a price, quite possible it'll cover the cost of the replacement!

Thanks guys. It feels cheeky to ask the garage but hoping selling the old cat will offset the recovery fee to the garage. OEM cat and a big volvo so hopefully get something back!

A guy on you tube (Salvage Rebuilds uk) recently did a video on cats, apparently they all sell them to emr so you may as well take it straight to them like others have said they can give you a price from the number on it

I recently had a clear out of a couple of old scrap cars. Mk4 Fiesta, and a Mk4 Astra G. I took the cats off and handed them in separately at our local recycling centre,( Mellor Metals), and they gave me £150 for the Astra cat, and £105 for the fiesta one, plus the weight of the cars, I came away quite happy.

Surely you shouldn't feel bad asking for it back and surely the garage can't say no!
It's your property. Unless they include taking the value of the cat off the bill, in which case take that into consideration when getting the quote to fit a new one.

One of my hobby/side buisnesses is precious metals refining so I'm always on the look out for them to play with (I cant get hold of the quantity to actually make much money!). Always struggle with knowing what to pay tho. Tend to end up with the aftermarket ones that no one really wants as theres not much in them! OEM ones very massivly in price. I need EMRs magic list of what they are all worth and I'd happily better them by a few quid.

Prices vary significantly. I used to chop them in when I broke cars.
An employee at LKM took me to a shed on my last visit, cut the ends off and offered me £3 each... I took them back, drove less than 5 minutes down the road and chopped them in with another merchant and got £60 per cat, so always call around.
