Let me take you back in time, back to when the internet was more than just the three sites you visit every day, when you had to surf, when you had to go on voyages of discovery. Back to when all the content of the world wasn't silo'd into a handful of sites to be used to sell you more targeted ads for the profit of half a dozen companies. A world that actually still exists, outside of the walls of our self imposed internet cages. Let me take you to the Rik Hoving archive.
Rik Hoving is responsible for Custom Car Chronicle : www.customcarchronicle.com/ a blog that is still alive and gets occasional long form updates with great detailed entries. On the blog he has a photo archive, it is great but it isn't what we're looking at today. Oh no, back before Instagram or Facebook sucked up everyone's photos in order to use face recognition to better target adverts for a new washing machine, we had to use other platforms. Some of them sucked (like Photobucket), some of them were at one time great but got a bit left behind (like Flickr) and some of them just kind of existed, like Fotki. The structure of Fotki kind of lends itself to having archives of material, and whilst it is old fashioned it sure is great when you find a well structured archive.
Behold! : public.fotki.com/Rikster/
It is catalogued in various ways, scrolling to the Custom Car Photo Collection and I (fairly randomly) selected the "Scott Pavey collection" and find gems such as
Or maybe you want to go for a specific build and see Bill Cushenbery's customs, they are documented too (often including build photos)
Sometimes they have magazine features also scanned (another Bill Cushenberry custom)
THERE'S MORE!!
He also has customs collected by Brand, want to see a custom Hudson? He's got you covered
Or maybe a Buick Riviera with lowrider paint?
This is barely touching the surface of this thing, an unbelievable project, built up over many years. Go and have a look, browse around and see what you can find
He is also very active on Instagram @customcarchronicle so check that out too.
