Hi all, I’m doing some paintwork on my VW van and am using epoxy primer for the first time. The van is in bare metal/old paint following having the arches and sills replaced. I’m planning to give it all a coat of epoxy and I understand I can then do any filler work over the epoxy (needs a bit of filler here and there). What do I do next? Do I use 2k high build primer and flat it back or another coat of epoxy, flat the epoxy and 2k top coat straight over the top? I’m so used to using 2k high build primer and flatting back with 800 - will epoxy work just the same? Cheers

I'm no expert but prepping with epoxy in the way you describe then topcoat has worked well for me.

Cheers, that’s what I think I’ll do - prime with epoxy, do the filler work, epoxy again, sand it smooth and top coat.
I want to avoid using 2k high build as it might be some time before I top coat it so didn’t want any issues with moisture.

I epoxied my Cortina before filler and took some advice from a guy who restores Lotus Cortinas for a living. He said you had to give quite a thick coat for it to be at its best and to make sure you give it a very good keying before filler to stop the filler from parting company. Mine was left for the best part of 18months in just the epoxy and the only place it had a little bit of rash was a small part on the front wing where the epoxy was thin.
This was an Octoral product.

Seems to have gone on well and good coverage over the repairs, hopefully will flat back nicely, fill and re-prime a coupe of areas then topcoat, don’t think I’ll bother with high build 2k, the epoxy seems to sand down pretty well.
