Got an old LTI Fairway with the Nissan engine. Supposedly it's also a Nissan gearbox but I wasn't aware they made their own transmissions?
It drives really well for about 5 miles and then it loses friction in the gearbox and engine power cannot be transmitted to the wheels. Forward and reverse both the same.
Anyone had any similar experience with a gearbox before?

I take it you've checked the fluid level/condition?

Yes the fluid looks nice. Not sure on the level as some people say lack of fluid can cause this. Other people say too much fluid is bad. There is 'plenty' of fluid showing on the dipstick. The dipstick is double-sided. One side for cold measurement and the other side for hot. I've been advised the engine should be running when reading the dipstick. Hence a bit uncertain whether or not the readings on the dipstick are good or bad. As of yet I've had no concrete advice on the correct reading.

Start it from cold, then check the level on the cold side of the dipstick.

Filter and fluid change is going to be the first thing to try. It's annoying when an autobox plays up as there's so much weird stuff going on with them that it's hard to know whether or not new fluid is a waste of time. And of course any specialist you talk to is going to say it has to come out for a rebuild.

Start it from cold, then check the level on the cold side of the dipstick. + many boxes need you to run the stick through the gears, back to neutral/park, then check.

The gearbox was replaced in the end. Has been fine ever since.
