Was servicing the Isuzu before I put it into the van. Changed the cambelt, which looked the same, and the lower idler which again looked the same. But the tensioners are different, what came out looks like this; And had a sprung steel strap that, I assume, was part of tensioning it. That strap can be seen on the new one in about the same position, but it doesn’t actually contact onto the pin on the tensioner Am I doing something wrong? Any advise would be awesome as it’s a blooming bank holiday weekend TIA

which engine is it? probably a variance in the tensioners used over the years as you've found!

It’s an Isuzu 1.7td (4ee1 I think) in a 1996 mk3 Astra As you say, probably a difference in tensioners, I’ve not changed many but those I have have had a sprung tensioner that you lock, whereas this won’t tension at all with the sprung steel lever that was fitted

Sort of, makes me think I’m not mad. But that’s different again, I will talk to motor factors in the morning I think, and see if I’ve got the wrong tensioner Thanks

Yeah (probably should have said) the one I have is a dayco kit. From the info you posted on the gates kits, my tensioner goes under one of the engine support legs, and that day I one has a relief to go round the whole leg I think, so I’d still need to fit a washer under one of the legs if I can get it to tension.

Is the lower bolt hole on the original tensioner replaced with one with just a stub that hooks over? Looks a bit odd to me But it is plausible as there are a few different engines we've had at work with completely different tensioner in the new kit
