I put a plug on the wire that used to feed the workshop, and connected the small generator. Within 1 minute all the LED strip lights above the benches went FAK and died. The fluorescent tube still works. All modern technology is useless. Still, I got the head cleaned up. Gave up at that point because muggy and sweaty and horrible because it rained for an hour then got sunny.

A bit more work tonight because it cooled off. Got all the valves lapped in, it was a bit late to be running the generator so I shut things down. I'll refit the springs tomorrow; the center two exhaust guides are slack and the seats are a bit recessed, so those ran hot. The engine has been taken apart twice from what I can see because there's orange paint and blue paint on the internal rubber parts (nice how neither time they replaced the valve seals...) and they could really do with renewal. A little bit of blow-by and blue smoke never hurt anybody.

Ungrateful sod refused to start. Set fire to itself a couple times. Got good compression now, plug #1 shows timing in the correct place but pops and bangs. Had a thought in the shower, the reluctor for the ignition might be dirty and not firing all the plugs. I'll check that after lunch. Phil

Ha. Refusal to start was because I'm a dumbass and put the distributor in backwards.
Indexed round 180° it started up but the carb is junk. I'll go put a rebuild kit on it, I think. They've got them on the shelf at the store here.

Getting it running, albeit roughly is a great achievement, I'm sure you'll get it running properly

Getting it running, albeit roughly is a great achievement, I'm sure you'll get it running properly When it fired, it ran very briefly on all 8. Considering someone's torn the choke off this carburetor (I think they dropped it TBH) that it even decided to run at all, let alone on all cylinders is good. Phil

Reading up on the symptoms, I may have blown out the diaphragm of the power valve. I'll check tomorrow.

Hi Phil, is power valve another term for the carb’s accelerator pump, or something else?
Best, John

Hi Phil, is power valve another term for the carb’s accelerator pump, or something else? Best, John It's a Holley thing- basically an enrichment valve. Takes the place of vacuum operated moving needles, it's a diaphragm connected to midway vacuum, which opens or closes an additional fuel path to the main jets, secondary to the primary flow nozzles

Didn't pull the carb, spent today doing yard work; however I did put the battery on and spun the engine over after rechecking the firing order (which was correct).
So, I started pulling plug leads off in order to see if it would stop the backfiring.
In short, the spark is going where it damn well pleases and not where the rotor arm points it.
I've just ordered a new HEI cap, rotor, coil and amplifier module because it was cheap ($24) to buy the entire set rather than go to Auto Zone and pay $48 for just the cap and rotor.
We'll see if that makes the slightest bit of damned difference.

Decided to check compression. I'm actually quite surprised it's as good as that (dry). Remember 5 6 7 and 8 were full of water. Widened the spark plug gaps out to 45 thou' because that's apparently where HEI needs to be; tried running it and it barked a couple times so that's most likely that problem. Carb is causing problems again, which is great.

Those compression readings are surprisingly good.

According to the golfball car episode of mythbusters, I think you're onto something.

After the Holley carb decided it was just going to carburate by pouring fuel down the intake as far as it could be pumped in, I went dig in the totes of stuff in the workshop. I found the original 2BBL cast iron intake manifold. It has sat in a bit of water but it's otherwise ok. Luckily the old Carter carburetor looked better, and surprisingly wasn't locked up solid despite being quite rusty. I started taking it apart. It has enough RTV inside for maybe 4 carburetor repairs. Everything appears to be there; the needles are straight and the profile is good. It's just a bit fusty from first impressions. I'll clean it up and see if it works. Phil

Way too clever this stuff for me. Hope it is an easy job for you. The only hard part is not losing any of the small pieces. I think I might have upended a ball bearing into the bin. Worse, the floor. It isn't made of that many pieces. But. i might have lost #43 from that diagram because I'm a moron.

Went take a look and there is no sign of the BB having been in there in recent history, so RTV Man likely lost it. I say that because spring #42 is also missing.
I'll try find out what size it's meant to be and get a replacement.
