Is your mystery wire a gearbox sensor for the MX5? They have a reverse light switch for well, the reverse lights, and a neutral position switch which works in tandem with the clutch pedal switch to allow the ecu to see if the car is in ‘drive (in gear, clutch released)’ or ‘neutral (or clutch depressed)’. The mystery wire is for the reverse lights. But you've just cleared up why there are two other switches on the gearbox instead of just the speed sensor, and what the switch on the clutch pedal does. Which is a big help. There are two 4-pin plugs near the passenger headlight that we still need to identify Anyone clever on here …..? rich this is the set Nick mentioned. They are on the passenger side loom, toward the, front, but behind the headlight plugs. ![](https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/mm90/niknakpix/IMG_5416.HEIC) And the wires feeding them. ![](https://hosting.photobucket.com/images/mm90/niknakpix/IMG_5417.HEIC) Thank you for any help identifying them.

Blue/white is common headlamp colour.
Could they be something to do with headlamp pod motors?

Blue/white is common headlamp colour.Could they be something to do with headlamp pod motors? If this was traditional Lucas wiring, I'd agree with you. But this is Japanese, and very different. We know the head/side/indicator plugs, and I'm going to remove the motor wiring today as it's utterly redundant. If we'd got to this stage a couple of weeks ago we could have looked at the Mx5, but that's no longer an option.

I think they are unused looking at the plugs. Not uncommon as there is only one wiring loom type for the MX5 so it covers all options and extras..

Can't you usse the headlight motor wiring to flip some covers round and have hidden headlights? C'mon

I think they are unused looking at the plugs. Not uncommon as there is only one wiring loom type for the MX5 so it covers all options and extras.. We came to the conclusion that they are for the air conditioning. As is another unused one on the other inner wing. I spent all afternoon removing all of that wiring, the airbags and lamp motors, and moving various things in the engine bay back into the car. Tomorrow's job is to eliminate all of the door wiring(windows, central locking etc) and connectors, and the remains of the stereo wiring. The remaining loom is already much simpler, and easier to fit
