gearbox is leaking on a pug 207 have cleaned it up today with brake cleaner and the leak seems to be forming at the mating face of the diff cover where it bolts to the main housing. there wont be room to do this on the car, gearbox will have to come out in the meantime, can anyone recommend a product that I can put into the gearbox to stem the flow?in the pic, it looks like its coming from drain plug, it isnt.

in the meantime, can anyone recommend a product that I can put into the gearbox to stem the flow? No, there isn’t anything that will stop that leaking chemically. Best you could hope for as a bodge would be drain the box overnight, clean it spotlessly and slather the external seam all the way round as best as possible with a decent oil proof silicone, and leave to dry before refilling.

Have you tried nipping the bolts up in case any have come loose?

this is a diagram of my box and you can see the rear diff cover/housing, on mine I would say its leaking from the joint below where it says "14" its coming from lower than where the oil seals push in for the inner CV Joints - initially when I became aware of a leak I thought it may have been one of those seals, but after cleaning it down with brake cleaner its leaking from near the bottom from point 14 or lower, I think its run out of oil now so I will get it back up on ramps in the next couple of days and clean all the area from the CV Seals down, and put some sealant on it up the oil seal level, let it cure for a day and then put some oil in, as long as it holds some oil I will be happy with that in the short term until i can get it looked at [too big a job for me]
so, plan is to clean area with brake cleaner, but what can I key the aluminium with before the sealant goes on? a small wire brush? I will of course make sure its completely dry before sealant.

today I thought too much and came up with a completely mental idea to try and fix it on the lines of whats been said above with sealant around the lower half of the joint but anter method....
why not just try Durafix Easyweld rod? melt the alu down along the seam where its leaking?
of course it isnt going to flow upwards very well if at all but as long as it can cover where the leak appears to be it might work.
permission to berate me is granted.
