I have a mk3 Astravan as daily, I did a engine swap about 18months ago. And have put about 20k miles on the Isuzu replacement.

Now it’s getting cold again, I have a cold starting niggle. When it’s cold I have to cycle the glow plugs a few times. Not a huge problem, but with the Isuzu swap I fitted the glow plug relays and control.

The controller is a Transtron QOS-5 and has 7 wires, one of which I suspect is a temp sensor as you can hear a relay click, and the time varies, when hot after 1sec, when cold it never stays on more than 1 second after the glow plug light extinguishes.

I can find very little info on line about the functions, and that combined with a level of apathy and knowing how to get round it means that after all this time it’s still there. But just wondering if anyone knew anything about it?







The unit has 7 wires on the plug;
Black
Brown/white
Brown blue
Blue
Black/yellow
Blue/white
Red/yellow

I’d guess; switched live, ground, wire to each relay, wire to glowplug light, which is 5

Cant be a great deal of help with the technical stuff as they are the work of the devil but what you also have in the circuit is 2 yellow relays which seem to be for the glow plugs(no idea why they list 2), an additional relay for the glow plug light and also a water temperature sensor with a single short wire coming off it, I may be talking rubbish but pretty sure the glow plugs stay on for longer than the light as well

Get your meter out and see what your getting at the glow plugs and for how long may be a good start, if you need any bits give me a shout

May not be suitable for your application, but I've previously wired glowplugs through a pushbutton and an old style starter solenoid, the ones for the inertia starter motors. It means you can have the glowplugs on for as long as YOU want, not be restricted by an electronic gizmo.

Quickest way to make the glow plugs work properly is to use a Landrover 300TDi glow time relay if you can’t get the original system to work. It has an air temp sense rather than coolant so it’s as simple as wire to battery, wire to plugs, ignition, crank and glow plug light output. Most come with the wiring diagram printed on the side.
