I know it's modern but this is annoying me.
A friend has brought her early citroen C3 round for some attention. She hasn't got much money, and is a nice lady so hopes are that I can save it!
Essentially it won't hold an idle. When you turn on the ignition it starts but splutters to death quickly (in neutral). If you start it then give it some beans it will go, but the idle will drop and eventually cut out. It apparently does it when slowing to lights, and around roundabouts?!
I can't see any obvious air leaks, the air filter is clean, I've been told that the MAP sensor has been replaced and the throttle body cleaned although I didn't do these. New spark plugs. A clutch sensor has been suggested.
I'm beat really!
Any thoughts?
Tia!

Is it drive by wire or cable? The ICAV stepped used to play up on the cable versions but I suspect it’s not going to be that…

I thought it was the idle control valve, but apparently it's been cleaned... I might just chamge it

It dies slowly, although is would argue it hunts a bit in the way out if that makes sense. I thought it was an air leak initially, but lots of sensors on what to my mind is a modern car!

I thought it was an air leak initially, but lots of sensors on what to my mind is a modern car! Modern cars have a lot of sensors. And in fairness a C3 does not. If it’s an 8V it won’t even have a cam sensor. They are fairly simplistic management systems from a ‘sensors’ standpoint.

I thought it was an air leak initially, but lots of sensors on what to my mind is a modern car! They are prone to MAP sensor issues you mentioned its been replaced but try unplugging it. If the issue stays the same then this may be part of the problem. I have had many a brand new sensor come out of the packet not working. Also hear stories of skipping cambelts causing similar issues especially in the 1.4, might be worth checking the tensioners and timing marks before it becomes a whole new engine job. Air leaks are also a possibility, brake cleaner aerosol around the engine bay especially vacuum lines and see if the engine note changes. I have also had similar issues on a MK4 golf and a Mazda 3, Golf was ECU they have an EGR reference sensor that can go bad. Would hunt for idle and die this took 18 months to resolve 3 ECU's and a new EGR fixed the damn thing and then the steering rack went.... The Mazda was a brand new EGR valve at fault. Again dying at junctions and hunting. EGR might not be a thing in this case but maybe worth checking.

Is it a petrol one? 1.4? Does it have motorised throttle? I think my 2005 did. Could be this playing up, assuming not an air leak somewhere. Pretty simple engines, also used in the Peugeot 206, Berlingo etc.

Give the throttle body a good clean first, don't rely on someone else's word that it's been done. I've had similar issues with a polo of equivalent vintage before and while the body looked clean, there was a very small 'lip' of varnish just around where the butterfly sat on idle which was enough to restrict airflow at idle and cause it cut out.

Totally different type of car but a few years ago I bought an MR2 for peanuts because of this exact type of problem. I however managed to drive it home from Wales to Kent by holding an idle on the pedal when there was no throttle input.
Turns out that over time there was a screw in an idle control valve which had worked its way ever since slightly out over a number of years. You could tell where it was supposed to be due to the amount of crud built up on the screw. I just chucked a bit of Loctite on it I think and wound it back in until I was happy with the idle speed once warm.
No experience with Citroen but thought it might be worth a suggestion.
Good luck.
