Pros: They look cool They can be used to support longer loads They provide an ideal seat/picnic table at rallies You can cruise with the top half open . . . Cons: Can make the loadbay difficult to reach into Can be painful on the kneecaps . . . BMC produced a split tailgate prototype for their ADO16 range But if you actually wanted one you had to order a conversion from Crayford Rootes loved them in the 50s and 60s Austin A40 was much more practical without that small bootlid The Swedes also go in on the act As did the Germans The Americans used them, especially on their woodies . . . and a couple others for good measure . . .

Yes please.
In a modern I prefer an up tailgate to side opener.

Just for curios sake and a bit of a think point, Range Rover aside the newest car I can think of that has a split βgate is the first-gen 3007. To redress the retro balance, Honda Civic anyone?

My dad had the Citroen DS and I loved the design of the double number plate in the event of placing long items in the boot overhanging the tailgate. Loved the rear boot seats especially!

The best wagons have this arrangement. Wind down the window then drop the tailgate. Also good for use as a shooting brake. Wind the rear window down, sit on the closed tailgate, and shoot over the roof while your mate drives.

The best wagons have this arrangement. Wind down the window then drop the tailgate. But then that's only a one piece, not a split tailgate. 5 series, too. Not sure if it started with the e34 or e39 though. But for some diversity I give You the Chevy Kingswood mechanism:

Going slightly of tangent so far we have had lots of Horizontally split tailgates which have all been praised for their usefulness. In G Wagon circles the split was Vertical and the primary users were not having picnics or lauding the useful loading technique but realised that having 2 doors meant you could jump out ( For surprise Birthday parties) at speed and you could shoot people easier shout happy birthday hiding behind the one closed door. Except for the Russian mafia sales with the split rear doors are as far as i have been told very limited. Look out for this type in Gangsta type films set in colder, Vodka drinking climates. My Old one mid restoration Note the normal door.
"Professional" Type for trade users. Slightly modified for birthday parties.

5 series, too. Not sure if it started with the e34 or e39 though. E34 certainly had it, became quite notorious for rubbing through the wiring to the rear wiper or lights if the glass part of the tailgate was used frequently π
It took me years to realise the EG Civic had a split tailgate rather than a regular full hatch, always seemed like an odd design choice
