I'm in two minds about selling this car as it's a good one, but I just don't seem to get time to use it. I've only done about 300 miles in the last year.
MGB Roadster For Sale
First Registered on 23rd March 1977 and now registered with the DVLA as a ‘Historic Vehicle’, so benefits from free road tax and is MOT exempt, making this a cheap classic car to own and run, as most insurance companies offer low cost, agreed value classic car insurance.
The car has had 9 previous owners, the last one owned the car for 19 years from 2003 to 2022, when I bought the car. I am reluctantly selling this and a couple of other classic cars as I am downsizing to a house with only one garage.
The paperwork with the car shows that it has been well loved and well maintained throughout it’s life.
Sadly there are no details of the original owners on file but the paperwork shows that in 1988 it was owned by Mrs M. in Hampshire, then from 1990-1992 by Mr. RMS in Eastleigh, from 1992-1995 by Mrs TJM from Lymington then from 1995-2000 by Mr JD, also in Lymington. During that period the car had the private plate ‘NRD 26’ fitted. In 2001 the car was sold to Mrs JH-S, again in Lymington and then in 2003 to Mr C, an Engineer from Fleet, who I bought the car from after 19 years of his ownership. He only reluctantly made the decision to sell the car when age and mobility issues prevented him from enjoying it any longer.
The car comes with a comprehensive service history - an entire box file of receipts, invoices, Owner’s Club Valuations, photographs and old MOT certificates, which confirm the mileage as genuine at just over 120,000 miles. Notable among the many invoices is one from 1996 for the engine to be removed, refurbished and rebuilt at a cost of just over £1000. The mileage when the engine was rebuilt was 102, 479. The car has only done about 20,000 miles since then. The clutch was also replaced at that time.
The car runs well on modern E5 unleaded petrol, without the need for fuel additives and has had a new hood (with zip out rear window) and a full stainless steel exhaust system with twin pipes which sounds fantastic.
In 1990 the car’s bodywork received some attention. New sills were fitted and I believe the car was resprayed. The work was clearly done to a high standard as 30 years later the bodywork remains rust free and in excellent condition, with just one or two very minor marks and scratches, but far less than you might expect on a car of this age. It was obviously restored and prepared well, as any lurking rust would surely have come though by now.
The car was last serviced in August 2022 at 121,944 miles and at the same time the MG Limited Edition alloy wheels were professionally refurbished, powder coated and polished and four new matching Pirelli tyres were fitted.
The current mileage is 122,248, which is the main reason for selling the car. It just doesn’t get used enough. I had a collection of classic cars but have cut that down to just a couple.
The 1800cc twin carb engine is very reliable and as the car also has factory fitted overdrive it performs well, easily keeping pace with modern traffic. When rebuilt, the valves were replaced allowing the car to run fine on unleaded petrol. Parts for MGB’s are very easy to obtain and everything from the smallest washer to a complete new body shell is available. They are a great ‘starter classic’ with many local and national owners clubs running events and shows regularly in the summer. Great venues to show off your car and get help and advice from fellow MG owners.
The car also comes with various spares, handbooks and a smart tonneau cover.
he car has a period radio / cassette player, but I prefer the sound of the engine and exhaust!
