Where to begin with this one?
First off, why do I have it? Some weeks ago I made the mistake of laying down a bold claim - book me a flight anywhere in the UK, ill be home the same day in a car I’ve purchased. So of course my friends decided to book me a mystery flight, only telling me the night before that it would be Glasgow. Come 9am I was indeed in Glasgow and stood in front of this.
Now why would I buy something boring for this challenge? That would be, well, boring. I had to find something I thought was cool… and oh boy did I!
What we have here is a very rare Rover 820 “Sterling” Coupe. It’s got a 2.0 engine, a manual gearbox and probably the comfiest combination of chairs and suspension I’ve ever experienced.
Purchased from an enthusiast who rescued it from a 12 year slumber (in a rail yard shed, randomly) and lovingly recommissioned it, it’s a surprisingly solid car. It’s tatty of course, but only one part of the passenger rear arch has any meaningful rust. Even then, it’s less than you’d think. I’m guessing it’s time stood still under cover saved it from the harsh Scottish winters.
Inside the specification is immense, for the 90s. Fully electric heated seats with a memory function. Stereo cassette with pretty epic speakers. Climate control, electric windows, sunroof etc. it all works bar the drivers heated seat.
Mechanically it’s had a lot of work in the last year. New radiator, new PAS pump, timing belt, clutch, complete service including gearbox fluids. It handled over 370 miles with ease. The only faults are a blowing exhaust, and a vacuum leak somewhere. But it runs and drives fine.
The bodywork is tatty. It has the standard 800 bumper sag, random patches of surface rust where stone chips have been allowed to propagate, and it needs a deep polish.
Overall this is a fantastically usable example of a rare modern classic. Really wants for an enthusiast to titivate it and enjoy it really!
£1250, offers welcomed, located near Oxford.
