Repaint your car for £24 ! . . . .

Remember these ads in the 70s and 80s? Did anyone actually do this?

I have to confess that my brother and I did - a poor unsuspecting Triumph Herald was revamped using 'Rally Red' (not listed in the ad above) which actually turned out to be a bright orange. The colour was hideous and the finish abysmal!

Fortunately, there are no photos of the finished car !!!

My dad did, to an old Peugeot 504 estate. The worst of it was our cat walked across the bonnet before the paint had fully hardened, leaving his prints indented!

A young fellow of questionable character (and intelligence) in our area used to brush paint his Austin Lancer with a different colour of housepaint every time he got caught by the cops. This was in the late '80s. There were two Austin Lancers in local circulation at the time and the other one was near immaculate.

Guy in the unit next to mine is a traditional coach painter.
As a change to his usual he brush painted a Polo earlier this year, looked stunning when done!!

that was either re-paint or tractor paint, not sure , got a special brush for it .

The reason i did it was the old paint was a bit porous ,and the car had to be parked outside , so ,until i could do a better job , i sealed it up like this , and from 5 feet way it looked great , just a faint cross hatching if you looked closely , i never sanded it back or buffed it , this was straight off the brush .

Yep, brush painted my old mk1 Fiesta with the Sahara Beige in 88 or 89. Then went back with some black and white and put stripes down the sides. Threw on some 13” Escort steelies and Leda springs (they were local) and I was rocking! Ah, the misadventures of youth, right? To be honest, it didn’t look all that bad with painted grille and bumpers but definitely a 20 footer though, and there were a few brush marks in places.

I still have 2 unopened tins of primer and Tartan Red, bought decades ago to repaint my '72 Mini. Said Mini was so rotten the roof bent as everything was so rusty it folded when I stripped it to "repair". Paint got pushed to the back of the shelf and has stayed there ever since!

Maybe I'll be able to sell it for a fortune as a Retro item some day (unless the tins have rusted out!

Back in the late sixties/early seventies my dad ( who was a painter & decorator to trade) hand painted my mums grey 1100. The paint was proper coach paint acquired from a friend of his ( also a painter) who worked for Alexander's buses, their buses were red, so the car went red
It was absolutely sticking out when finished, even after some fairly intensive inspection by my friends and I not a brush stroke could be found !

The biggest problem with using coach paint at home is dust.

Yup, with jenotlite repaint in the mid 90's I repainted my 1st car (mini that the previous owner had rolled and then filled the roof badly and stuck a vinyl top on it to hide it) red after reading about it in practical classics. My impertinence (being 17) and not reading the instructions it ended up with brush marks badly. Later bits I did (following the instructions) were a lot better.

we did a herald with proper coachpaint and the finish was pretty good, Also did my Land Rover with a foam roller which gave a nice slightly orange peel finish, trick was to do it on a cool day so the paint had the time to flow out before it begins to cure.

No tales of hand car painting but knew I’d seen a can of it somewhere recently, I either inherited it from clearing out my dads stuff or the father in laws, just found it….

Back in my youth I brushed my polo, did it on a hot day so ended up with mega brush lines 🤣
