I was kind of expecting a bit of rot and I do need the welding practice. I suppose I could pro street it and by tubbing the rear out that would remove the rot on the inner rear arch. Not sure my welding/Engineering skills are up to that though Any one ever stuck a small block in a derby?

Ohhh dear - its gone in all the usual places I haven't heard of anyone doing a V8 Derby before - but it wouldn't be the only RWD one though.... P.S; Don't be too disheartened - i've seen mk1 Polos/Derbys in much worse condition Its whether you think its worth your time and money spending on it I suppose?

A bit rusty, but it seems it can be caught (says me who's reshelling a truly obliterated Imp, but it's alright because mine was in worse nick than that, accident damaged for a start, and even more so after my brake failure that made me crash it again! ) That seems savable to me, don't lose hope! PS a rear engined Derby, now there is an idea! Anyone else ever see that twin engined Golf that ran about a few years ago, no idea if it still exists, it was either that same yellow colour or green, but I don't remember much, only that it was meant to have 500 horses and I thought it was well coo!

I saw a mk4 golf with a turboed 2.9 VR6 engine in the front and another in the back, with nearly 450bhp each Adam

a mate of mine has done more work to his very long term project (10 years now !) as in new full rear quarter panels and a new roof, keep with it.

Yeah it looks saveable to me too - doesn't look as if the inner wings are holed, just rusty.... a wire brush could uncover plenty of good metal there. Buzz a few patches on, underseal, job done! If the worst comes to the worst, what are your feelings about a tubular front end?! You can design it to fit any engine you like then!

That would be Steve? - who runs a MK3 Polo 1.3 GT engined MK1 & a Bay Canper. Will he ever finish the Derby? - from the sounds of things it would have some trick features.

If the worst comes to the worst, what are your feelings about a tubular front end?! You can design it to fit any engine you like then! Its funny you say that, i have been seriously thinking about buildng a tubular front end, not sure the best way to go about it. I have also thought about making it rear wheel drive using porsche 924 / 944 parts as the gearbox would sit in the back then and offset some on the engine weight. I thought about using some of the components used in Lo-Cost Kit cars for a double front wishbone set up which could be gratfted into the tubular front end. All big ideas I know but this what happens when you have a long train ride to work in the mornings. Any suggestions/thoughts/idea's are welcomed. Cheers DD
