I know we've talked about steel wheels loads on here, but I need to make a decision... I've just got hold of a set of 15 inch steels for my Merc, but I'm really liking the deep dished look that you see a lot on VWs! So, after a cursory look at the said wheel, it seems a pretty straightforward affair: the wheel centre is welded to the rim by a number of 1inch beads of weld. If i ground these off, punched out the centre and re-welded it in the other way round.... hey presto, one seriously deep dished wheel! Then again if the wheel collapses at speed... hey presto, one seriously dead BenzBoy! Can't find ANY info on the net about it. I'm wondering if there's a company that does such wheel mods... or if it's even legal for that matter! Any thoughts welcome!

I believe Bob Knight is allowed to Dish steel wheels,.. : www.classicvw.co.uk/Drop him a mail and ask him... he could at least tell you the rules on what you can and can't do

As far as I know a DIY job is illegal, I'm not sure I'd trust myself anyway, if it wasn't exactly straight or strong enough you could end up with some interesting incedents mid corner! It is legal for professionals to do it as far as I know, as long as they have the equipment to check wheel balancing and the like, the same goes for 'banding' where the rim is cut and has an extra band of steel welded in to widen it, which again I wouldn't like to do at home, I don't trust myself with welds that have to be that accurate!

Thanks for the replies! Having engaged my brain, there is a bit more to it than I first thought - if I just flipped the centres around, the valves would be on the wrong side, and the rim is shaped differently on the inside too... Best leave it to the professionals I think!

Maybe that's the best way, that keeps insurance companies and the police off your back anyway!

when i got the 411 insured the form i had to fill out regarding the mods asked if the wheels were banded, and if so by whom.so maybe theres an approved place that could do it for you. as for the valves being at the wrong side, wow what a subtle mod .bit of an to check pressures, but so what,I'm not into practical. ;D

as HotWire pointed out Bob Knight might be a useful contact...I seem to remember him doing re-rimming on the 'Rodfather'. I believe he has offered the same service for others.

I know banded wheels where banned from rallying a few years ago as there had been a few accidents due to some badly bodged ones. There was an artical in classic ford about six months ago and a lad with a mk1 escort fitted a set of mondeo 15" wheels and he had cut the centres and rewelded them. don't think its strictly legal but if its done right its possible the main problem is making sure that the centres are central with the rim if its only a few mm out the car will be lethal and will be impossible to balance the wheels. It all depends on how much faith you got in whoever is gonna weld them up

My welding is OK for bodywork, but for really critical stuff - no way! ;D After scouting around Google, it seems a bit of a black art really. I'll try emailing Bob Knight, see what he says!

Good find rmad!! That's kind of cleared a bit of the mystery up. I dare say that having them done will be out of my price range at the moment, but it won't hurt to find out how much it'll cost to get a set made over here!

Bob quoted me £200/pair of 15x8 vw 4x130 wheels, and seemed very knowledgeable- I'll be buying some when funds allow...

This link turned up in the latest Retro-Rides - www.rjspratley.co.uk they can restore Rostyles...but more relevant to this thread - they split the rim from the centre to do it...check out the 'wheels' link for a pic. while your at it check out the (annoyingly small!) shot of their P5 on 17s!
