Some people have all the luck it seems. At the moment, I'm torn between keeping my Pug 205 GTi 1.6, or my MKII golf GTi 16v. I love the way the pug goes, and handles and all, it's great for Rutlands twisty bits, and fantastic for the Jaunt to Letchworth I find my self doing a lot these days, even pretty good on the twisty roads around Ashwell, Royton etc, (fun roads, ask Nick B, I'm sure he's had a play ), but the golf does all that, and it feels a lot safer to me as the driver, so I tend to push it harder. Also the golf suits my rev happy driving style, and is better for long cruises. But the pug seems to be loads of fun, probably because its lower geared and revving loads, where as the GTi is relaxed and makes a great sedate "town" car too. Damn it, one has to go, but which one?

That's a tough choice! For me, I'd keep the Mk2 Golf GTi - I really like them, they're dead reliable, and great fun! So hard to choose between them though, they're both great cars!

they are both really nice, the Golf is a little better built, and feels a little more sure, but the Pug is just fun. that said, I tend to drive the golf hard, cos it likes it

I'd say Pug. It's the grin factor that they give you. It's partly BECAUSE it feels so tinny and skittish that it makes it all the more fun. Really regret selling mine...(even if it was at death's door engine-wise!) I'll agree that's gotta be a tough choice to make!

i would def keep the pug... I'm not a massive fan of MKII golfs - bit overweight for me. i know what you mean about the safe thing tho, 80mph on the motorway in a 30yr old car scares the bjeezus out of me !!! I love the way the pug goes, and handles and all, it's great for Rutlands twisty bits, and fantastic for the Jaunt to Letchworth I find my self doing a lot these days, even pretty good on the twisty roads around Ashwell, Royton etc, (fun roads, ask Nick B, I'm sure he's had a play ), but the golf does all that, and it feels a lot safer to me as the driver, so I tend to push it harder. rutland... ashwell.... i had a friend that lived near there for a while... big house owned by her majesty... don't get the wrong impression... got in with the wrong CROWN n all that...

Keep the goof!! Just cos they're cool... although pics of them both would be good just to help us decide for you head talking rather than heart, keep whichever isn't going to give you major bills... i'd have loved to keep my G40 but it was going to need bearings/struts/exhaust hanger/shocks/paintwork before long, and on 150k not too long before needing engine work. the audi i got insted needs nothing more than a service and on 118k is going to be like that for a while.

Straying a bit off topic here.....but....
Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the old comedy show "Rutland Weekend Television"? It had Eric Idle and Neil Innes in it?
Pure spoof comedy - Rutland 5-0 - cops in Morris Minors trying to do American cop show stuff set against a peaceful middle England backdrop...... "It's no good, we lost them....they'll be on the A1 and halfway to Biggleswade by now...."
Comedy Genius!

how about this to consider;
my thoughts would be that GOOD Pugs are hard to find. & due to the higher build quality on the VW you may be more likely to find a decent VW than a Pug should you wish to get another further down the road.
For me it would be the pug, as combined with the fact that although the VW does everything the Pug can do. The Pug did it 1st (discounting the mk1 VW) & thus as more kudos & classic status.

i know what you mean about the safe thing tho, 80mph on the motorway in a 30yr old car scares the bjeezus out of me !!! Really That surprises me, as I find that a certain 37 year old estate car is perfectly stable at higher speeds than that ( ) as long as there aren't any strong crosswinds. In Nov '03, I had the misfortune to have a blow out when doing 75 / 80 mph on a derestricted autobahn (had been doing just over an indicated 115mph about half an hour earlier which must have overloaded a (good quality branded) tyre - I found out afterwards that I was doing just under the speed rating ). Despite the sudden lurch to the left (and central reservation) as the tyre deflated, it was still stable, but with about 20 degrees of right lock to hold it straight. By the time I had coasted over on to the hard shoulder (didn't fancy using the brakes unless I really had to!!), the tyre beading was up in the wheel well (& wheel rim was running on the sidewall). However, at no time throughout all this did the car go out of control, nor did it feel anything other than stable. Back on topic... I'd choose to keep the Pug, assuming that both are in the same condition. Otherwise, whichever car is in better order.

Other thing I have to consider, I take my Mrs out in the car a lot, and therefore, the golf appeals, just cos it's a lot more "planted", or feels so, compared to the Pug.
Don't get me wrong, the 205 is great fun and all, and needs less work, that said, my golf only has a black wing (rest is Tornado Red), other than that its ok (for £100 I ain't moaning).
and the 205 is always doing stuff wrong, like the windows refusing to work (again) and the dodgy electrics in general.
Bugga.
Maybe I'll get another garage off the council

I'm very familiar with both cars and IMHO I would keep the Golf, although the Pug is better to drive the Golf is built better and is more reliable, they also have a better after market.
