Just browsing eBay, as you do, and I notice that there are more than a few people selling old tax discs - some from the 60s/70s, some from less than a year ago!
What's all that about then? What do people do with the older ones? Classic car owners or something?

It's quite common to put a "period" tax disc on your car for shows and photoshoots, isn't it???

Sounds a bit illegal to me.

I like long walks, especially when they're taken by people I don't like.

I fancy getting a few 'period' beer mats for true authenticity.

Sounds a bit illegal to me. And to me. I saw a set of 6 (oldest was from the '90s) for a tax exempt Midget being bid to £17 As for photoshoot / car show uses, repro ones are available, so something isn't right - bear in mind that an old tax disc is one of the things that the DVLA accept as proof of a vehicles original numberplate when reallocating them to cars that have been off their system (ie logbooks lost or off the road when everything was computerised).

Sounds a bit illegal to me. It is if you're using it on the road I think, but if your car isn't on a public road then you can do what you like with it as far as I know, although having said that the government, when their heads aren't half way up George W Bush's a*se, are busy making up new laws allowing them to tax you for a car that's off the public road, so it's only a matter of time before your car needs to be road legal to be off the road as well, with a hefty fine as a threat if you don't comply! But anyway, as NickB says, they stick them on them during photoshoots, shows and the like, so as long as these shows, photoshoots etc don't take place on a public road then the car doesn't need a current tax disc. I think. Although it's not something I've done myself so I'm not sure. Mind you there could be something to the idea of using old tax discs to re-register your car as exempt, I've heard of scams to do that before, so it's possible isn't it?

It does, but I've heard of it, whether it was entirely true or not. The idea is to send away evidence that your car was built before January 1 1973, and hasn't been registered in a while, so that they can give you an age related number plate and give you tax exempt status. Not sure if it would happen so much with tax discs, but one way that I do know is true is by nicking the chassis plate off another, tax exempt car and trying that way. I was once advised to do that by a local guy who'se done it a few times, when I was having trouble reregistering an Imp I had, and there was a recently scrapped Imp saloon that would be exempt if it was on the road nearby in Irvine, but I said I wouldn't bother since it was well dodgy and I didn't fancy getting done for it since it's probably fraud. How he gets away with it is beyond me since the number stamped into the metalwork somewhere on the car would then be different, but I suspect his mate who does his MOTs for him who'se a bit dodgy, so it's not likely to be reported even if it is picked up on, there are some really effective dodgy blokes round here.

I'd do that me like. If you own both the cars outright, and are not building dodgy 'rebuilds' of mini coopers or lotus cortinas using standard shells, no harm is done. its only the same as re-shelling a crashed/rotten pre-73 motor with a less rusty secondhand shell, which is no big deal in my book.
If everyone did it there'd be hell on I suppose, but its quite possible to do it to imps and other 'lowish value' motors without anyone being defrauded or whatever.
Thats what I think anyway.

I know but at that point in time neither of the cars were particularly roadworthy, and I was in the middle of trying to re-register it, so the DVLA might have got suspicious if I suddenly changed the chassis number of the car I was trying to re-register.

Fair enough. its the sort of thing you wanna keep 'simple', the last thing you want is the stasi DVLA asking loads of questions.

You're right there, I can do without the hassle, that lot are obsessed with squeezing money out of you and making things difficult, they'd have found some way to catch me out and I'd get fined or something knowing that lot.
