Cheers guys, I would keep it if I could afford to. I have a feeling the valve stems will need doing soon (get a puff at start up, but they burn oil anyway, the manual even gives figures on how much oil you have to top'um up with) but if your not a fan of welding this is a great project. I've driven this car for over 300 miles now and it hasn't missed a beat. I think £1,000 is a far price as I've seen rot boxes on e-bay go for £1,200, and I'm throwing in some nice spares e.g. some new chrome/interior bits/another period radio/carb re-build kit etc

I have a 2.0 engine and 'box that'll be going spare soon too - 93k miles, totally reliable... whoever buys this could have the engine and box off of me for less than it'd cost to do the stem seals! I really feel for you mate - you spent such a long time looking for the right car. Is fitting a diesel lump not an option? Cheaper to run although it would be a bit on the slow side

I would consider a deisel lump if I had a garage but I haven't at the mo The valve stems are not a big issue anyway, I've only had to top it up once! I've managed to find an old banger to go to work in so I'm not clocking an extra miles on the merc. I would ideally like someone of here to buy it. But if not (and I manage to hold the new job down) I will keep it and go with my original plans of matt blacking it and fitting air bags. Although I would prefer to sell it at the mo.

I guess you could always eBay it - should get close to what you want for it (although eBay is strange sometimes).

I've got a bit of interested in it at the mo, one person is talking about a p/ex with a convertable golf gti. I'm just gonna see what happens, if it goes it will be a sad day. Talking of e-bay if anyone does buy my merc they should by these wheels as well cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7950122918

Man, I feel for you not being able to shift it, even at that price. I would, under normal circumstances bite yer bloody arm off! However, having been walloped with a £1200 tax demand off the scheming highwaymen inland revenue, I'm a bit short ATM! (I wouldn't mind, but this is money that the buggers have already refunded me once! )
