Just got a quote for the Scirocco with Sureterm Direct (people on the back of RC mag). Gave them the purchase price of £104, to be kept in a garage, full no claims, limited to 6K miles a year, fully comprehensive is......................... £296 That's neary 3 times the value of the car. What a joke................

I had the same thing with my everyday heap, a Mk5 Escort (it is sh1t but it was only £100 and it goes...). My old insurer wanted the same money as my 1975 BMW 2002, even though the BMW was previously fully comp & the Scrote ain't worth insuring for any more than 3rd party.
Whilst on the phone to the muppets (Frizzells), I got an online quote from the AA for litterally half the cost - when I asked if they could beat it I was told "no". Even though I'd been with them for about 12 years. So I told them to poke it...
Insurance is ridiculous. No rhyme or reason to the costs...
Anyway, time to get off this soapbox, I'm getting splinters!!! ;D
Cheers Tim

Haha went on to the confused.com website for a renewal and after filling out numerous checklists, they came up with....wait for this. Out of a list of 20+ underwriters, Not 1 insurer was interested in covering the car because it had an engine transplant Its back to Adrian Flux , unless someone here knows of a co that cover modified classics ;D

All the online insurers rely on you being a bog standard driver with a bog standard car in order to get the best deals.
Engine transplants and other "heavy mods" are never going to fit into there business plan so you will always get a better deal from a specialist.
Just don't touch Adrain Flux. Bunch o' fekkers!
ps like the context sensetive ad on this thread!

£241 doesn't sound too bad to me - i'm paying about that for Third Party only insurance on the Derby - but then I've only recently lost the six points on my license for speeding on the M1 The value of the car doesn't make a great deal of difference to the cost of insurance - at the end of the day the Scirroco is basically a MK1 Golf GTI underneath, a MK1 Golf in similar condition would probably fetch over £1000 - the £241 wouldn't sound so bad then

iRocco: Try telling them the car's worth £1000. They'll like that then.....£100 car to them says DEATHTRAP. They don't want to be insuring a car that may be an old crock just a few months from the knackers yard - it's all about the risk - these dufuses (dufi?) assume that cos your car is cheap it won't be well maintained, thus making you a greater risk of having / causing an accident! Just a thought.... Also have you tried the context-advertising Elephant? I insure the Beemer with them. Costs me £450 (fully comp & breakdown cover) this year with all mods declared. Not bad considering I went to them with zero NCB (thieving travellers!! ), and certainly cheaper than any of these "specialist perfomance & modified" clowns!

Just been checking the ZS for prices.
Seems it falls into a hole in the middle. I can get £108 fully comp easily but to get the car on a approved value policy it MUST be locked in a garage overnight. Since I don't HAVE a garage I'm stuck with the situation that my car will be market valued (£10) if it's stolen or I hit some-one, and noone will do TPFT on it. Seems like they want their cake and eat it. Why am I not surprised!
May look into outright competition car insurance! I can see the discussion with the wife now
"But if I instal a roll cage it's actually CHEAPER to insure. In fact the roll cage is almost free if you look at it like that"....ow!
;D

If you have mods its best to go with a specialist. Many others wont rouch you, or if they will their prices go sky high. Ive always heard good things about lancaster though. I'm surpised you've had a bad time with Adrian Flux 104ZS - ive always heard good things with them. As for HIC - steer well clear!! incompetant arseholes.

I've heard completely the opposite. I'm with HIC for the Mini, they were very helpful on the phone, the guy even had a chat with me about my car, he seemed well into his cars. No extra for my cage either! Adrian Flux wouldn`t even consider insuring me, its only a bloody 1275! Golf is £252 fully comp and £50 excess, am 23 with full NCB, not too bad I thought.

AND that was after my "Family Discount" allowance, as my other half works for them (Until they move her job to India and the staff are replaced with lying two-faced monkeys who haven't a clue what you're saying to them as they only speak pidgin english and can't offer any form of "customer service" at all cheaper labour... )

;D I had a ridiculous quote from Norwich Union. I said that you didn't quote me happy, but you did make me laugh. When I get the Benz back on the road it's gonna be a nightmare. The muppets I was insured with quoted me £1500 TPFT on renewal - I was paying £380 before. I think they just pull a number out of their ar$es. No wonder people go without insurance. To$$ers. I'm paying £300-odd to insure my $hit heap of a Hyundai and that's the best quote I could get - some wanted £800 or more. OK so I lost my NCB but it's still ludicrous. And another thing - this NCB scam scheme is supposed to reward careful drivers, so why do people lose it for claiming when their car is stolen? What, does being unlucky qualify as being reckless?? Do they think people leave their cars with the keys in the ignition and "steal me" written on the car? It's a f***ing scandal - they know we have to have insurance, and they know they can shaft us for it. I'm in the wrong business!

I'm STILL paying the cost of having my car pinched nearly 3 years ago. 1st renewal after losing my NCB was over £800. On a 1400cc Astra. All because a couple of thieving travellers wanted 15 minutes of fun in my car. That the police couldn't work out who was responsible was amazing. Considering the car was found burned out in a field next to the traveller site.
