Go for it - enter the world of proper car instead of messing about with those silly little BMW's. Sorry, </pretentious mode>
Seriously though dude, the 280 is a dog-slow (well, 160bhp) double overhead cam 6-pot, but it'll go on forever, give good fuel consumption (mid/high 20's) and it'll be insurable - you'll be able to get it on a classic policy.
The w126 was the best car Merc ever made (subjectively, of course), and I can garauntee that once you have driven one, there is no turning back to 'lesser' cars.
Even if it turns out no good, the wheels are worth £500, and the yanks will give you £200 for the 'euro' headlights. Then there is the wood trim, leather seats (if it has them) - my mate is looking for a 280 engine/box... Basically quids in which ever way you look at it!

I'd like to help you, really I would... but I don't believe there is a logical reason to NOT buy it. ;D

I have no idea what i'm talking about, but I imagine the V8 ones to be more economical than the straight six. thats a lot of wieght for 2.8 litres to lug round.
LOOKS COOL THO!!

I totally agree - the W126 was the last of the Mercs built up to a high spec rather than down to a price like newer cars. Fantastic little details like fibre-optics used to illuminate the gear selector - it's the early '80s!! Fantastic cars. Looks like someone got a bargain there!
