I know i'm not going to find anything retro at one, i'm thinking more of donor cars.
Anyway, there's one near me and thought i'd check it out. Does anyone know what the general crack is, i mean can anyone just turn up and start waving their hands in the air to bid on stuff? Or, do you have to be a registered buyer or something?
Cheers

You'll have to register with them before you can bid. They will probably ask for some kind of identification.
When you are bidding, make your intention clear, but not stupidly obvious (or the traders will trot you up on a pile of tat just for a laugh).
Keep your wits about you, and don't get carried away and you'll be fine.
Remember to pitch up early for the viewing! You won't be able to change your mind once the hammer falls!

I love car auctions me like. if its just your local clunker-house you shouldnt need to pre-register. You can find some ace old heaps there occasionally. get in there, get a horrible dog-burger and some greasy chips and get biddding!!! DON'T take one of those 'parkers price guides' with you as you will look like a donk.

just remember that aucion houses are the favourite offload joints for traders to get rid of part-exchanges that wheezed onto the fourcourt and probably had to be towed to just around the corner from the auction. it's no coincidence that my local auction place is on a hill...!

There's one in Glasgow that I've been to thje odd time, it's good for old Volvos and other unsellable stuff that I'm the only person who actually likes , you occasionally see Maestros and Montegos too, I even saw a Vanden Plas Allegro once go for quite cheap, so not a great deal of popular retro but plenty of nice and interesting unusual and/or more recent classics.

You can get some real bargains there. I don't work at the auctions any more, but just last week there was a Mercedes W123 went through for £30!! OK so the clutch was kaput but the rest of it was sound. Then again there was a Nova SRi that had been t-boned that some chump paid £200 notes for! Don't bid unless you have the readies in your back burner though - as soon as the auction is done you'll be expected to put up 50% or £500, whichever is the greater. If not, they just put the cars right back through the block - no "I'll just nip to the bank" malarkey! Dunno if this is the case with all auctions though... As Mr_Bo11ox said - don't take a Parkers Price Guide or you'll be spotted straight away! The traders use Glass's Guide as the prices are actually realistic but you can only get that thru subscription. The auctions I worked at had certain "days" - banger days, Ford days, Audi days etc... just find out when the trade-ins go thru and pick up a bargain!

Been to this auction a few times. Some good stuff at reasonable prices as long as its not a recognised 'classic' ie Mk1 cortina, beetle etc. Some people get carried away and push the price way up over the odds. Stuff people aren't sure of doesn't attract many bids. Mercs were quite cheap last time I went but it just depends who turns up. www.johnsuttonauctioneers.co.uk/eca_home.htmThe vx ,which I want(need) in my garage, went for £60 a while back but came back at the next auction (possibly didn't meet the reserve). I think the premium is 5% or £50 of the sale price

Most important thing is to keep cool during the proceedings, if before the auction starts your givin the car the once over making up your mind, don't at any point show that it's especially interesting and that you would pay good money for it, because then you're asking for the price to go mental, as people see that there's demand and think they must be onto something special, before long you're in a bidding war and have to pull out when it gets silly. The same applies when buying a motor the conventional way for different reasons I suppose, even if I'm looking at a particularly interesting motor that I really want, I don't show it at all, and just act like I might be a wee bit interested but I'm not really that bothered, if a seller thinks he's onto something special, he'll realise he can charge plenty and he'll have the upper hand in the haggling because he knows you want it. Now if you act all apathetic and act like if the price is too high then you'll not bother, then he'll realise that if he asks too much he'll get nothing from you, so you play it cool and he'll be more likely to let you haggle your way to a decent price. But I suppose you already knew that!

I didn't manage to get to the last auction (23rd Jan) so the VX may still be available. It was a barn find along with a MK1 consul that sold for £2000 before christmas. The interior was in good condition and body not too bad for a vauxhall, not many people bothered to look around it when I was there and bidding was slow to non-existent (£60 winning bid + commision) I was very tempted but lack of space and cash stopped me! Maybe next time.........

Classic car auctions can be good for a bargain too cos you'll find it full of spotters who only want to bid on the MG's and the E types. You can pick up slightly more unloved motors for penuts on the right day.
