Last night the pedal bin gave up the ghost, so naturaly I had it in the shed for a tinker.... unfortunatly it was a write-off, and I don't think you can get spares for them.... ;D
But it got me thinking, does anyone else always try to mend things before resigning themself to buying a new one? or is it just me being tight? ;D

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Absolutely! I take great joy in taking broken things to bits, even if I don't fix it, it satisfies my curiosity!! Recently I got hold of a load of DVD players which didn't work. I took them to bits and fixed half of them . Christ knows what I'm gonna do with them all but it was satisfying to get them working ;D. Anyone want a cheap DVD player?

I'm always taking things apart just to see what to do but chances are i can't remember where all the little bits go and i chuck them in my mess draw never to see the light again. the on-off button went on my tv a while back so i took it all apart, not realising it has a thingy in it and i got a bloody great belt off it

oh ive got a mess draw. if any one says something is broken it is the first place i go to and see if there is any bits in there that can be used to fix it. or bodge it!!but then the broken item usually ends up in the draw as well! and if i had the money that i had wasted on buying replacements that i had opened up to have a look in then i think it would be enough to fix the mini!!

are any for sale with a remote ? Unfortunately not, as when the players fell off of the back of the lorry, the remotes must have stayed put. I got one of those universal remotes off eBay for a couple of quid but it still only operates a few functions. I see them as "healthy DVD players" as you have to get up to press the buttons! ;D They aren't really up to much, and you can get new ones for about £25 these days. I do have one earmarked to go in the Merc, Pimp My Ride stylee Probably something I'll never get around to doing but hey....

I'd love to be the sort of person that takes everything apart, fixes it/makes it better and has a load of really interesting mechanical projects out in the garage. But I'm a total moron when it comes to anything mechanical. I was taking the battery out the Golf the other day and couldn't work out why it wouldn't lift out when I'd disconnected the terminals. Took me a good ten seconds or so to realise that there's a bracket bolted in at the bottom to stop it falling out I wish I was more mechanically minded, I really admire people who put V8s into improbable cars or restore old wrecks but I'm old enough now (31!) to realise that my skills lie elsewhere... just haven't found them yet

I try and mend most things .... except toasters .... I learnt my lesson with toasters too many sprung loaded "bits" that fly apart when you take them apart. S

DarrenW - It's good to know I'm not alone in the universe! I too am a hopeless halfwit when trying to fix stuff... I start with something which is functioning, albeit not quite as it should. So out come the tools. Within minutes I have something that no longer works in any way apart or rattles or emits smoke. I have therefore learnt my lesson, and for most stuff these days admit defeat before I even begin and summon "expert" assistance. Bodywork I can cope with. Been unbending motors for years so that's OK. It's the greasy stuff I fear. I mean what ARE all those little bits left over FOR exactly... An example of my "fixing" - a few years ago my Skoda Estelle would routinely pack up in the electrics department. Lights, wipers, heater etc. would all give up when it was cold dark and rainy. So I took it all to bits and "re-wired" alot of stuff. Worked fine to begin. So went for a drive. After a mile there was smoke pouring from the dashboard, and flames in the instruments....Oh Dear!

Some would reckon that you are lucky at being able to repair bodywork - it's normally much more expensive to pay someone else to do that, than fixing the mechanical / electrical bits. I can do basic mechanical stuff ok, but I don't have a garage / workshop / garden shed, so it all had to be done out in the street when I was a student. Now I just don't have time, so I have to pay someone else to maintain the Amazon (but they do a better job than I ever could, have the parts in stock, and normally get it back to me in a day).

Bodywork is fine as long as you resign yourself to the fact that it WILL look worse before it gets better.

Fix it! I love taking things apart, but AmazonSprite is right. It's a pain when you have no space or time. I've just built a workshop to tinker in as I love doing DIY as well (!).
I once took my Dad's Apple Macintosh to bits whilst he was on holiday and swapped the hard drive for a bigger one I happened to have. He never noticed!
If it's broken, bring it on.

i'm curse word with cars (i tried to fill the hoel in my wing and failed, tried to suss my own exhaust gasket and got too nervy before i even started, only thing i can do is regular servicing) but i work as a laptop repairperson so i'm cool wth electronics.... i can have you a new mainboard in your laptop in twenty minutes flat fixed my daughter's tamagochi when she said it was broken instead of shelling out fifteen quid for a new one... even though it's never been out of her sight it's got water damage to the buttons, hmmmm
