Well I was going down the route of a Toyota TownAce/LiteAce/MasterAce, but after reading up on the overheating issue's and parts problems I'm having second thoughts. I've also come across an oportunity for purchasing a very well kept Volvo 240 DL Estate. With full t & t low owners, decent colour in and out and fairly local to me. So is there anything I need to look out for in particular And googling hasn't turned up huge amounts of info either, so they any good Obviously it goes without question, that upon purchase the Oxy torch will be taken to the springs and a set of modern rims fitted ;D As always cheers in advance.

The first car i wanted was a 240, they are great cars, huge, safe, lots of power, huge luggage space and some people really do know how to slam them! Stick in Volvo 240 into Google and be amazed by what some people do to 240s lol I just looked out for rust and odds and sods, most have been used as donkeys so will have been nocked about a bit, power steering and alarm was missing from the one i loked at. A guy told me this was not uncommon since most have seen so many owners. But anyway, go for it!

My dad used to have one with the B23 engine. Look out for the tailgate - they rust like mad. Also the usual places - wheelarches, sills... They are a bit thirsty but if you can get a 2.0 one they aren't all that bad on fuel. Personally I really like them, and they do look exceptionally cool when slammed in a nonconformist stylee!!

oh and once you've sat in a 240 front seat you'll want to rip them out and stick them into every other car you own ;D

Do it. I might be biased but it's given great service over 18 months. Parts are easy to get and mucho cheapo. Fixing it is really easy as well (although the Haynes manual is pants).
The brickboard.com is the place to hang out for tips and tricks. If the one you look at has heated seats, check they work, most don't because the first time you kneel on the seat, the heater pad gets damaged. Electric windows that don't go up or down are just the door switches needing a clean. The worst rust trap is deep in the bowels under the heater core, leaves get trapped and hold the water. It is accessable, but not an easy job. Wheel arches can rust. Door bottoms and of course, that tailgate. I'm lucky, mine has lest rust than a new car!
Mine's a 2ltr, not much go, 123bhp, but I don't care. It's barge tastic.
Good luck with it if you go that way.

They do just go on and on and on, they don't say that 200,000 miles is puberty for these cars for a reason you know lol Think it was last year, might have been the year before that, but one guy and his imaculate 240 got to 600,000 miles with the original motor, the car was absolutly mint and Volvo gave him a brand new free top o the range car ;D

spotted on VZi, a vw forum.... www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread.php?t=1437911979 Volvo 245DL Estate, 125k, 7months MOT/6months Tax. SALE/SWAP/P.Ex -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- There you go folks, like it says, a 1979 245DL estate, 2127cc B21A engine. Sky Blue, with original dark blue and black interior. all original inside. very good condition for a 25 year old car, wear on drivers seat and dog nibbled front door handles/headrest. brand new spare tyre. MOT is up 5/8/05. There is bubbling on the bottom of both rear wells, But the only bit of major rust is in the spare wheel-well, NOT an MOT fail. a little scratching on both front doors. Good carpets, comes with trays and mats. New centre exhaust box in Nov.'04. Tow bar with dual electrics (great show tow-er). Daily runner,in better condition than cars half its age! this really is a great car, it has a sunroof, and had 2 new front wings in 1998, i have loads of receipts going back to 1984 MOT's for the past 5/6 years, and a CD player is negotiable for the right price. This car is a real PRACTICAL CLASSIC! Any more information, pictures, or to arrange a viewing, please email jamesellin@hotmail.com or phone 07851131955/01527 831631 The car is based in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, right on the M42 junction 1 or M5 junction 5 I've got lots of pictures, so don't hesitate to ask for them, or please come and see it. I've had a think, and i am asking for £450 BUT, i am VERY VERY open to offers. Swaps, part exchange either way (me or you, show us what ya got). thanks. james.

Always wanted to put the 3.0 V6 from a top of the line 960 in a 2 series, as well as all the huge brakes and better suspension etc (although the standard 240 has massive tuning potential because everything's so hugely overengineered that you can modify it a lot without fear of ruining the reliability, and that engine's good for a lot more horsepower, espeically a 2.0 turbo or 2.3, although I was thinking a while back about making a 2.3 turbo but it fell through when my donor car's turbo etc was found to be knackered! )
