For the first time in almost a year, I bought Practical Classics again.
My G/F bought a book in Tescos so I got a magazine for myself.
I thought I would give it one last chance and it does have the start of a Matra resto which looks interesting.
I'll let you know what its like.

I bought it the other month on the strength of there being an avenger tiger on the cover, only to find that all it had inside was a terry davey cutaway pic of an avenger like what you find in a haynes manual. Never before have I felt so cheated by a magazine and i swore I'd never buy it again.

Couldnt agree more, what a pile of rainforest-wasting w**k. Saying that i bought the latest issue and it is more entertaining than the previous few, (which is not saying much). they are rebuilding a Matra Bagheera, quite a left-field choice so fair play to them on that front, at least its not a snotting MG/triumph.

i would encourage you to always flick through the mag to make sure there's some interesting stuff inside too, but then i do that and i always get engrossed in the good articles, buy it, get it home and find i've read the best pages already!
i might try a Retro Catrs alternative though, off work ill (cough cough) so need something to keep my interest.

The best alternative to Retro Cars is probably PPC (Practical Performance Car) which is where all the real journalists who used to work for Practical Classics went to, leaving mainly buffers to staff PC, and making PPC a pretty good magazine! The mag's sort of like Retro Cars, it deals mainly with modified classics, but it's different enough to justify me buying both!

Yeah, I totally second that about PPC - superb magazine, with proper features, proper tech articles (such as making your own fuel injection - including the throttle bodies!) and some real enthusiasts/journos. Total respect to them - its like CCC was before it went curse word, with more classic car/retro car stuff. Deff my fave mag at the moment. PC - yep, buffer central at the moment. Dull & treading water. They need some new blood - with some knowledge & enthusiasm - to really make a difference and then go back to the way it was three or four years ago. Retro Cars - good mag, but can be a bit "lightweight" in its features sometimes. I wish they'd be a little more indepth. So no-one buys CLASSICS? Can't think why....

Just cos something is good for you doesn't mean its good for everyone - for example Marmite does not make good Dog Food.

I am doing the whole megasquirt/throttle body thing from PPC I got all the parts needed bar the brain (think I will use seperate brains for spart and squirt) from ebay. Excellent stuff. I am hoping for big things from the Lotus on mapped fuel and ignition. Will keep you lot posted on whither it works or melts another 911!!!!!

I got Classics once and it took me about 2 pages to realise it was a classics mag for the millionaire Silver Shadow car owners type person, certainly not for the 17 year old trying to get his first classic for under £700 lol

Well that was a waste of £3.70!!
The only mildly interesting parts were Rust-in-peace, the strip down of the Matra and the classifieds.
I think I'll stick with Retro Cars and PPC
A test on overalls and the chance to win an Austin Devon.... no thanks!

I used to like PC before Retro Cars and PPC came out. Will Holman et al are great and really make PPC an enjoyable read! It's amazing how the classics scene has evolved though isn't it? It used to be a choice between either a classic car mag for traditionalists or something like Street Machine if you were into modding. Now the modified classics scene has really exploded, and I'm so glad! I remember my brother coming back with this new magazine he'd found which looked right up our street (Retro Cars), and since then we've both been avid readers! I have to be honest though, I havent bought either RC or PPC for a good while as everything I have (not much!) has been going into the Merc project... £3.70? That's a rocker cover gasket!! ;D ;D I will be buying them soon though... getting withdrawal symptoms!

Can't think why.... couldnt agree more with all that, I agree RC is often a bit lightweight, seems to have the most interesting cars featured though. Also its a sod to get hold of. That 'Classics' magazine is unbelievably dull and crummily written, its so full of waffle and non-informative features it's quite shocking. The last time I bought a copy my heartbeat had slowed down to 5 beats/hour by page 20, and I had to be taken to hospital. I may yet write to them asking for my money back. At least its printed on absorbent paper i suppose. PPC is my favourite, and I am qualified to say so cos i spend a fugging fortune on car mags! i love em!!!
