Looking good VWDan - Are you getting all those wheels done at this place per-chance?......[ftp]http://www.wheelrefurbishing.co.uk/index.htm[/ftp] I want to get some of my wheels refurbished (just re-painted) Someone mentioned the above company as a good place to go & would be interested to hear your experience with them BTW I rather like the black lip spoiler on the boot - I think it will suit the theme/purpose & look of the Jetta when its finished

Yep - BVJ Engineering. They have done some wheels for some of the lads from the club before and done a great job - Andy is also a bit of a VW nut which helps. I'll take some photos of all the wheels when i get em back, as there are some interesting ones being done. I spoke to the engine builder this morning (RPM), to find he and the other two blokes have gone their seperate ways - nice of them to tell me. Jim is now building the engine, and has gone to Kenya for a couple of weeks, and it will be a couple of weeks after he's returned till the engine is ready, so thats at least another month then. Not a happy bunny, coz i've now gotta travel from Blackburn to Hemel Hempstead to pick all the alloys up, and then back down to Kent in a months time to get the engine.....peeved off lots The petrol costs were being nicely covered by everyone else who's chipped-in to get the alloys dropped off and picked up - curse word curse word curse word!!!

U for a pic of this 'gasser' style? Would be interesting to see. The car is down to be in the undesirables section at Inters - got asked about a month ago to enter it - if it gives me free access it'll be worth the hassle ;D Looks like this friday I have to get this little lot back from daan saath in one piece without scratching them: Should be fun loading the van up then...

Looks like BVJ will be the place to take my wheels - and they are not too far away Was going to get my wheels re-painted by some powder coaters that we deal with at work - but not being specific wheel refurbishers I was worried about the quality of the finish & what care would be taken to not painting the 'mating' surfaces Tough luck regarding the engine builders - hope it all comes good in the end.

Right. After a nice (boring) drive down south and back, i've got all the alloys back to their rightful owners (unfortunately ) Took me n dad an hour to get the van loaded as didn't want any of the wheels to get marked in transit: Here's some of the handiwork done by the refurbers. ATS Cups which i believe are going on a 1979 MK1 Golf GTi: Pirelli P's going on a standard looking, 20VT powered Mk1 GTi: 8 inch wide RSL's for a MK2: Some Audi alloys: Some alloys which are going on a friends track MK1 Golf: And some rare Strosek alloys, which are going on a friends metallic grey MK2 Passat: Didn't get a pic of the 17inch BBS splits which are winter wheels destined for a Corrado VR6. The rest of the alloys are mine .......... Borbets in a black chrome finish: ATSs (centres to arrive shortly): VW Estorils: 14's which are going on the red MK1: And BMW BBSs, which have come out better then i imagined - he did the nuts with a new chrome paint as a test, i think they look brill: Now all i need to do is save up for some tyres Might sell the Estorils, as watched a refurbed set sell for £350 a couple of weeks ago on Ebay, so might try and recoup a bit of money .....and someone has just offered me a sequential shifter to fit my cable change box ;D

DerbyDan - hold fire on sending ur alloys to BVJ for the time being. I've now had chance to have a good look at all my alloys, which were taped together in pairs when I picked them up. I'm not exactly happy with a few of them. One of the ATSs has a lovely big black mark on the inner edge of the rim, next to the spokes - must be about 4 inch long where it appears its not been cut back far enough to bare metal after painting. At least one of the Estorils hasn't been cut back far enough on the outer rim - if you look at the before and after photos originally they have a pattern which flows from the holes to the outer edge or the rim - because of the corrosion this tends to get cut back and ends up being removed - fair play but two of them have marks where this pattern still remains just after the holes - you can just see the marks in the pictures. To add insult to injury, at least one of the 14inch multispokes hasn't had the rim cut back far enough again, and there are some black pitting marks in the diamond cut outers. Considering they had the wheels for virtually two months i'm pretty peeved off that they have given me them back like this. I know we got a good deal but i'd have rather paid the full price and got them done right, as i don't want to put them on the car now. God knows how i'll get them the 200 miles back to them and then back to me in time for the shows. I'll be ringing Andy tomorrow and having a chat - i'll let you know what he says, but at this moment in time i'm seriously not happy. Out of 5 sets I sent down, only two are now ready to be used. Grrrrrrrrr

Bad news with the wheel refurb's Dan, it's a pain using companies miles away when something goes wrong. Hope you manage to get it sorted. I'm looking for somewhere to do my BBS RA's as they are past their best after 15 years but want someone I can trust to do a good job, and preferably local to me, Cheshire area.

Other side of town to Mill Hill The rest of the wheels they did were perfect - maybe its just because those three sets were in the worst condition. I'll see what he says and try and get somat sorted. Looks like the red one will have to wear gold 7x15 et25 BBSs for the time being ;D I might end up dropping the alloys back down there when i go down to pick my engine up in a few weeks time....hopefully I've got a few weeks till the first full show of the season

I think I know who you mean, but not met him as yet - he's a friend of some of the other club members who live over the other side of town to me. I'm supposed to be going with them all to Anglesey soon as they are all doing a track day, so thought i'd pop along and watch - keep the enthusiasm going! I'm from the Roe Lee area....no comments either

Spoken to Andy at BVJ and he appologised for not discussing the wheels when I was down there picking them up. Basically the Estorils were a bit out of shape - they have straightened them as best they can, but they are diamond cut in a machine which holds them on the rear of the rim - he said he'd taken as much off as possible and they couldn't really be cut back any more on the outer edges - same goes for the multispoke 14's. To be honest the multispokes don't look that bad, its just that I know the little marks are there so it'll bug me - i'll have to learn to ignore them However, he didnt know about the big black mark on the ATS wheel, so said if i posted it down to him, he'd redo it and post it back - bit of hassle but i suppose its fair enough. I'll stick some pics up so you lot can tell me i'm being fussy and should stop moaning ;D What size 14'' tyres do you lot think I should stick on the multispokes - I don't wanna go too small as its a 4speed and don't want it to be screaming when i'm on the motorway The rims are 6'' wide. Currently its on standard size 175/70/13s on 5.5j (rare ) steel rims.

Hi Dan, Too late - I dropped off my wheels on Saturday morning, he said you'd been to pick them up the previous day. Sad to hear you are not completely happy with your wheels - hopefully mine will be alright - can't go too far wrong with just a re-paint? I must admit that Andy seemed quite a nice genuine guy, so I hope that the work on your wheels was genuinely the best he could have done? And hopefully the one marked wheel gets re-done to your satisfaction. Not sure on your tyre sizes - i've got 195 x 45 x 14" on the 6" steels on the Derby but these might give too small a rolling radius. I had 185 x 55s on some 14" Alloys I had on a Nova many years ago but they were abit baloony - maybe you can get some 185 x 50 profile?

Local tyre place said they can now get a 175/50/14 which i rekon might look good, with a bit of a stretch and some slight lowering of the sidewall, it'll lower the car a bit more too ;D

Am I being fussy? Gotta go down to London for work in a couple of weeks so i'm gonna take the wheels down with me and drop em off on the way back. With a bit of luck i might be bringing the engine back with me too - spoken to Jim at Racepower and the block has been done, pistons fitted, crank, flywheel and pressure plate balanced and lightened, head has been done with new bigger exhaust valves but no cam in as yet and i don't think its been put together yet, but i'll ring him after Easter and see if it'll be ready for collection the following week. Not touched the MK1 recently either, as still trying to get my new daily driver on the road. After the paint job, i've serviced it but still got more bits to fit, although it did squeeze through the MoT (just). And nearly finished digging out the rear garden too, to get the MK1 off the road.....

just a little update. Not done much to the MK1, apart from paint some of the interior with red oxide to stop it rusting any more... Dropped 5 sets of alloys back at the refurbers on friday - when it came to getting tyres fitted to the Borbets i found that they had 'forgotten' to straighten them first before painting them (BBS's were a bit wobbly too), so two of them were too wobbly to be used.....i just dumped the entire lot down there and told them to get them all sorted as i know they are capable of doing a decent job. Unfortunately Andy (the owner) had an accident in the oven, and has 2nd degree burns to his arms and face, so might not be working for a while - ouch The engine still isn't ready - when Jim came to putting head and block together he found that the oilways didnt match up, so the head has gone away to be welded and have a new oil way drilled, then it should all be built up - i'm aiming for next monday to collect it (hopefully.... all these journeys down south are killing me). I've also just invested (paid deposit anyway) in a Quaife 6 speed synchromesh close ratio gear kit for the gearbox from a friend of a friend - new/unused and still in boxes, i'll be picking that up next monday when i'm down in London again. I'll also be living off baked beans on toast for the forseeable future....
