Scirocco 1.8 'DX' motor... basically same as mk1 goof gti over past week it's developed a ticking from the top end, sort of noticable at idle but definately there at 1500rpm and above... i'm thinking tappets cos it's what everyone always says when a car is ticking but is it likely to be these? how hard to find out / change? cheers

Have they got hydraulic tappets? Mine's the Mk2 valver lump so I don't know about DXs. If it has, it might be one of those sticking slightly. Mine does it when cold, goes when the temperature needle starts to move. I've asked a couple of times on different forums and apparently it's not really anything to worry about.
not sure if this applies to yours though!!

Cracked exhaust manifold?

Both likely candidates I'd have thought...
The fact it developed quite quickly would point towards a hirline crack in the exhaust manifold.... but that it goes away when the engine is warm does point more towards tappets.....
Either which way, it's not something to be overly concerned about - I have a similar probelem on my BMW (show me an old beemer that doesn't tick and I'll give you the moon on a stick!)....the guys at my local BMW specialist said it's no cause for alarm. It does pi$$ me off though....

Try changing the oil, on mine that quietens it down quite a bit for a little while.

Nah, modern timebombs don't tick anymore! ;D ;D ;D ;D I'd say tappets, of course it could be the exhaust being cracked, or even something rubbing within your engine bay, check that there's nothing that could be touching anything else in your engine bay that could be making a racket.

Hmmm, I've always found tappets make a "clack" rather than a "tick" when they are worn. But then again without hearing it it's hard to say....

thanks for the replies guys... been at donnington all day so not had chance to reply. it doesn't go away when warm, it's there right from startup and never shifts. the quattro had a cracked exhaust manifold though and that used to go when it was warmed up, only took a few miles. the noise started fairly quickly but over a few days - certainly not an instant noise like something has suddenly cracked. definately wasn't doing it when i bought it, now it is two weeks later i'll do an oilchange - it's not long had one but i don't know what was put in it so i'll ask the buffers at the scirocco register (joking! they're a top bunch and not at all like i imagined members of a 'register' to be) what's best to use - or anyone on here got any ideas? i'll look into the hydraulic tappets though, not sure if it's got them. might lob a set in anyway when i get paid if it has. rather do pro-active mantinance on this car and replace bits as i go than endlessly repair things only after they break.

just seen this.... both my 'rocco's did it... although I sold them, so didn't solve it... My BMW had a cracked manifold, and the 'rocco's ticking sounded different to that! my money's on the Tappets dude... my old valver was the same too! (as was my audi 90..) I'm spotting a theme here....
