They are a direct fit on either setup, the hubs and top mounts are still the same Rears are a direct swap as well. I haven't got it on a weigh bridge yet actually, might try and do that next week as I'm quite interested to see what the weight's like.

Unfortunately I had a bit of a set back in the morning, found that the drop links did in fact foul the brake hose so I had to reposition the brackets. Decided to make up some new ones from ali plate. It seems I didn't read your thread as properly as I thought, as I just found this same problem and was wondering why I hadn't seen it in your thread... but there it was ;-) Even though I don't have droplinks the mounting points on the 306 shocks still cause a problem. I think I'll fix it by welding the brackets from an old beam rear axle to the bottom of the brackets on the car... Or something like that... Your fix looks very good too!

Sorry the write up never came! Exam time = very busy.
We're in the process of ordering a set of Grp A solid beam mounts from Baker Bushes to tighten up the rear a bit as we found that the beam is actually able to move from side to side on the car! Can't be too good for the old lift of oversteer predictability and means that the tyres rub on the inner arches from time to time. That'll be the last of the standard bushes gone from the car then!
Can't wait for prescott on the 27th / 28th of June, possibly my favourite course and i'm hoping to take a couple of seconds off that 58.something I managed last time.

great work as every adam. just been to harewood hill this weekend gone and my mind is full of activity and none of it is uni work as it should be. I'm defo gonna race my car now but I'm thinking <1400cc as i'll have my engine spare if all goes to plan. dunno whether to do modified production or plain old production class. trying to decipher the regulations is a task in itself but i wanna be slightly competitve hence staying in under 1400 class. sports libre is a joke and over 1600 needs big bucks for good engines. next race is miles off i see, don't forget to update us good luck in the exams aswell, uni next year?

I'd try and keep it in the upto 1400cc roadgoing if possible. It requires you to keep a full interior but you'll most likely be competitive, although if you run your proposed semi-spaceframe you'll be knocked into sports libre Yep, uni next year Scary stuff but i'm looking forward to it.

uni aint scary at all, don't worry about it, 1st year requires zero concentration and 100% alcohol ;D
semi-spaceframe is out, my long term plans are/were for a full spaceframe but that would be with a different mk1, i've grown fond of mine ;D
plenty of time till i can afford to race yet anyway. plus I'm not too sure about keeping it on the road with an extrernal eleccy cut off.

Got the 205 back off the trailer on sunday (just sat there for a month!), gave it a hose down to get rid of the muck and leaves and decided it would be a good idea to start fitting the solid rear beam mounts (which arrived very promptly from Baker Bushes!) before the MOT which has been booked for next tuesday. Wet: Got some nice stance on it, aided by axle stands.... Tired old rubber beam mounts: And 45 minutes later the scene was a bit like this: Not too bad for a beam removal, aided by the lack of seized / difficult bolts as I've only just put it all back together! Started by removing the front bushes. The technique i chose was to burn out the rubber and attack the outers with a large hammer and chisel. Burning... After about an hour with the hammer and chisel.... Those bastards had really welded themselves in there! Thats as far as I got this weekend. Jobs for next weekend: 1) Remove bush outers from other side 2) remove rear rubber blocks 3) Bolt up new bushes 4) Reattach beam 5) Reassemble car 6) Bleed brakes.... again. Then it's MOT time!

Is that the base model beam on there? If so you probably would have benifited from a 1.6 beam, much better. You'll love those bushes though, they made loads of difference when i fitted them, oh and take that beam strap off before you refit the beam. It's pointless and it adds weight.

Base beam but with GTi torsion bars and a 24mm ARB, so the only difference afaik is the skinnier drums! The strap's definitely coming off it just gets in the way whenever I do anything under there! I'm hoping the mounts will make the lift off oversteer a little more progressive, as at the moment it seems to squirm around a bit before snapping unpredictably! You can see it catch me out on the first corner of the Dimanche sprint video....

Time for an update! It's been a big week, with both the 205 and AX being MOTed. I managed to finish fitting the Grp A beam mounts on the weekend.... Removed the bushes from the other side then used the 'threaded bar' technique to fit the new nylon (i think...) ones: Then bolted up the ali blocks in place of the soggy rubber ones: My dad and I managed to get the beam lined up and on surprisingly easily with the use of a jack and a rubber mallet! Then it was a case of getting the brake lines connected up and bled, the handbrake cables back in and everything ready for the MOT:) MOT was on tuesday and it passed first time! Couple of advisories for corrosion and leaky exhaust but other than that nothing! Happy! Unfortunately the AX wasn't quite so lucky. This arrived this morning: A slider kit for the drivers window as currently there is no way for air to get into the car! Will be fitted before the season starts.

Top thread - just read it from beginning to end Cheers! I must read it beginning to end at some point, see what it reads like Forgot to report on the difference the beam mounts make! Well so far... a lot of noise. The tyre noise from the rear has increased dramatically, so I wouldn't really recommend them for a road car. We'll find out how they affect the handling at Prescott hopefully Oh and the AX was retested this morning and passed! However it looks like it'll be replaced with something modern soon.

This is coming on so well mate. Hopefully we'll cross paths again at somepoint this year. I keep seeing the Polo at VW shows! It even went up the 1/4 mile at Santa Pod at GTI spring fest! Nick
