National Hot-Rods great form of racing.

Been a fan of Hot-Rods since the Barry Lee,George Polley,Duffy Collard days.Then of course Ormond Christie came along and by chance his mechanic Stan Woods,found the Starlet and that led to the great years,who can remember Phil White winning in the rain in 88,with Polley just behind him,for me those days were the best.Now adays of course you have Carl Boardley,John Christie (Ormonds son )out in 206ccs,Tigras etc.And now the historic Hot-Rods,Anglias,Chevettes,Escorts and Starlets again,with a few of the old stars out in it.....Below is pic of the modern breed,sorry for poor quality Skool

I'm gonna admit something here... I had no idea this sort of racing existed! I mean, I know about Hot Rods, and the NHRA (I assume they're something to do with it?)... but these sort of cars, I've never seen before!

You need to get out more!!!! Only joking don't take it the wrong way....Yeah I love the things great pic of one of my favourite cars a Pug 205,just the speed thirty cars on a oval ah,can be better than s** sometimes watching it.Once had a run in a National a 206,scared the **** out of me,I had only raced a 1300 Stock Car before,go to a meeting you will love it Skool

I agree mate, especially about the hot rods of the 70's. I too used to follow the national boys although due to young family and lack of funds could only afford to go to my local speedworth track at Wisbech but recall the duels between Polly and Lee (what a showman) I really liked it when Polly had his old Anglia and Lee introduced the Escort that they were developing.
My own car in the mid 70's was a 1650 precrossflow Anglia, lowered on 5 1/2"J wide steel rims, wooler gear change, Cortina GT struts/discs, lowered with cut front springs and blocks on the back leafs (thats how we did it in those days) anti tramp bars etc. bucket seats and lots of speedsport extras I have had a lorra lorra cars but that is the one I wish I could have again Oh! the colour, Aquatic jade a very early metallic and the dogs goolies in those days.
Back to the racing you could see all the racing all the time, plenty of action but I have to admit that when the field opened out after a few laps you would often miss a big pile up or wicked overtaking move cos you was looking the other way ;D

I miss Wisbech the concrete..great track to race on but the surface,compared to our smooth ovals here ah,car needed new shocks after one heat!!!!.Seriously is track still there are like so many others houses on it.Favourite track I love it Hednesford sorry all the Irish lads reading this...glad to hear other older Hot-Rod fans on here cheers mate for that Skool

You should build another sure you have some of that old stuff,tucked away..Me I did same but with something else now very rare,and would be lynched if I said what but you think back to one of Leos cars in Total colours not a Ford........and who can remember watching it on World Of Sport on a Saturday afternoon the caravan Banger racing ah cringe time now all the old stuff....Skool

National Hot Rods, Stock Rods, Lightning Rods, Legends cars, Classic Hot Rods - more oval racing than you can shake a pointy hot rod stick at ;D

Skool did you ever race at arena essex? Used to go there a lot in the 90'S when my uncle raced group a and 2 litres.

No but heard its a tough track mind you Ricky Hunn and his sons learnt on it..Nowadays is that the place they use for NSRA swap meet Skool

I used to Run Bangers at arena essex back before they tarmaced it, loved the hotrods never quite got round to swopping over to them.

Yeah jason was the youngest. Ricky jnr used to do a lot of setting up on my uncles car. Are you still racing nationals?

I used to Run Stock cars at Arlington (on my doorstep) Wimbledon, ringwood and a couple of times at arena Essex. My friend used to run National's and it was a different league financially. in 3 years I only got through 1 starlet and 2 escorts. He was changing cars every 4-5 months.
Ive been out of it for a long while now. Is George Polley's daughter racing now?

Ricky did do a few rounds this year, he was parked up next to us at Hednesford WQR3. A real character, good laugh... ;D

My friend is running one of Ricky's old SHP chassis.

c'mon someone post up some nostalgia ovals! Back in the day this was a haven for 105E Anglias and Mk1/Mk2 Escorts! Some cool stuff. there have been a couple of threads on here where people have bench-raced the idea of a NHR styled car for the street. Daylight-only MOT and some glass would be needed, but I still think the idea is a go-er.

Think grass roots NASCAR but small scale LOL

Nah mate never done Nationals just 1300s,been doing autograss in a N**a but you get to my age,old bones hurt!!!!!.May if I have a hunt round find pics of my old cars,don't own a scanner,so no idea how I can get them on.Ricky Hunn along with Tick steward,Andy Steward,Perry Clack etc are a good laugh,the years of Christie,Leo,Polley,Davy Evans were the best in my opinion Skool

Alright mate, done it years ago,must find pics might take a day or so,thing was so light it scared me.....Skool And someone do a Shuvit in Davy Evans colours please....
