I had a strange experience at work today. As some of you may know I work for Lloyds Pharmacy as a delivery driver. I was leaving Trowbridge and heading towards Melksham when I came up behind a man driving a Rover 45. Now the road we had just left was a 30 limit main road and after we went over a roundabout we were in a 50 limit bypass. As we went on the bypass, things got a bit weird.
The man I was following started to behave a bit irrationally, he started by nailing it up to the roundabouts then braking sharply and slowing far too much for them. He then turned his lights on and then turned his fog light on (I should explain than the conditions were wet but it was barely misting out so it wasn’t nesacarry at all to have a fog light on as visibility was very good) which I thought was confusing. As we exited the last roundabout on the bypass his manner took a turn for the worst.
It started by him showing me the V sign out of the rear window a number of times which confused me even more......I began to wonder what I had done to incite this sort of behaviour......I mean, I had my side lights on so I wasn’t blinding him with light beams, I wasn’t tailgating....... you know the usual suspects to incite angry driving. Then he began to brake heavily in front of me repeatedly........which confused me further because I was far enough back from him for it to not really affect me, I just downshifted gradually and lightly applied the brake to avoid a collision. Then things got really weird. I saw him pick something up in the car, lower his window and lob something at me! It turned out to be an empty can??? (I think it was a Tango can if that makes any difference) Well this really confused me; I began to think “what have I done to enrage this can throwing maniac” “how has my driving driven him to this point of insanity where he considers throwing cans at me to be a solution to a problem that doesn’t exist”
By now I wasn’t just confused I was starting to get a bit angry. I found myself wanting to keep enraging him..... But the only way I knew how to do that was to drive behind him. So I continued to follow him (he was going the same was as me, I wasn’t just stalking him) so I continued on my journey behind him and (despite us being on a busy bypass now with lots of following cars) he continued his insane braking and accelerating manoeuvres. We then turned in to a town and he decided at this point to floor it up to a roundabout (he must have hit 60 in a 30) and nearly crash in to a car that was coming on to it and I turned off in to a street to do a delivery. It was probably a good thing really because I was beginning to feel a bit like the truck driver from “Duel” relentlessly taunting motorists..........only difference was that I didn’t know I was doing it.
Anyway I just felt like posting this because I don’t really know why this guy was driven mad by me driving behind him. I began to believe that he has a psychosis triggered my an object, possibly in this case a Ford Transit Connect??? This forces him to act irrationally and turns him in to a can wielding nutcase who torments motorists.
