evening all, hope the improved weather is making the outside projects more fun.. I had the police round last night  the reason?  ? someone had complained about the camper overhanging the pavement off the drive...... apparently I can technically be done for it not having atax disc as it is "on the public highway" due to it overhanging the pavement wouldnt mind but its been like this a year, and the landliner was even longer.... so now i have to move it to work......without tax and bring the humber home ina similiar situation as we are limited to how much stuff we can have at work now... why couldnt they just come knock on the door and ask me to move it?? why get the Bizzies involved... BTW its a cul-de-sac and 50% of the parked driveway vehicles are pretty much front wheels on the boundary path/drive if you see what I mean, and people don't use the pavement anyways as theres no traffic up and down the road... so if you have a motor on sorn hanging over a pavement off the front of your gaff then beware as its technically on the road and breaking the conditions of the SORN agreement.. I'm not getting charged by the way but have been "unofficially cautioned to sort it out" |

SO if the ass who reported you wants to play his face, he could call the rozzers back when you move it and they could do you for driving it somewhere else as they are aware it was on your drive huh?

Daft suggestion but would removing the bumpers gain you enough room to stop it overhanging the pavement?

yeah basically... my problem with taxing it is its classed as disabled at the mo and I need to go to worcester to tax it over the counter at the DVLA apparently.... but rest assured when it'S TAXED IT WILL BE PARKED outside the house on the road NOT on the pavement... lets see how they like it then. I have a pretty good idea whoit was and if I park outside my house instead of as it was they will have merry hell getting on and off their drive as they have a big car lol..
its been years since I drove sans tax, didnt enjoy it then and am not looking forward to it now but I have no option.. if the van isnt moved they are going to do me anyways so I'm screwed either way

hi Idy no I don't think it would... to be fair the landliner was a total mickey take as the bumper was actually overhanging the road OFF the pavement OFF the drive lol......
which is why I'm surprised this shorter van has caused any grief

what the police say and what is actual law can be 2 different things they were probably only making that up to put pay to a complaint about somebody working on a car .
a car is only on a public highway if the wheels are in contact with the highway ie if you had a wheel over hanging the drive it would be in contravention of the law as it doesn't you are not breaking the law about having an untaxed vehicle on the road you may be breaking a bylaw by having you car partly over hanging the footpath but that would need to be dealt with by the council

Similarly if you park in a space that is on the edge of double yellow lines (as in, the last space before the lines begin), as long as your wheels aren't on the lines then you're legally parked. The car body can overhang the yellows. I hate mithering neighbours like those, with sod-all better to do with their little lives. If I were the police I think I'd be knocking on their door for wasting police time - it's hardly a matter for the old bill. |

W*nkers, makes you sick I'm in the same boat ie I have to work on the drive, luckily my neighbours a pretty sound and know that I'm a bit of a car nut. The only problem is as I'm a tenant I'm not allowed untaxed vehicles here, plus my wife works for DVLA so if I get caught with untaxed vehicles she gets penalised and it goes on her personnel record What really p*sses me off is when the neighbours give you dirty looks when your working on your car, but then are full of glee when they need your help with thiers....... The guy opposite me is a off road nut and also a tenant, he asked his landlord if he could build a shed on the side of his house, while he was erecting it I told the neighbours he was building a clubhouse for his offroad buddies and the close was going to be full of jeeps covered in wibblepoo......you should of seen thier faces... ;D We still laugh about it now  |

thing is I don't work on it on the drive.. its simply parked there could understand bad feelings if I was out there grinding and faffing about but I don't... I'm lucky enough to be able to take stuff to work to fix... |

good luck, i wouldn't risk it though, is it insured? if yes book it in for an mot on the other side of town so if you get stopped its legally justified! all it takes is an auto numberplate recognition system to spot you and its bend over for the constabulary pineapple...

yeah both the camper and the humber are still insured, camper even has 11 months mot on it.. just no rent in the window...
well I just got back... drove the camper to work smoking like a snotter (think the engine is about to give up the ghost finally) jumped in the humber which hasnt been run since god knows when flicked the key it started straightup and drove it straight home....
ill get the humber booked for an MOT next week and take my chances see how it goes..
least the wife can run me to work... she has been for the last month lol

Nosey pain neighbour or not, its common sense not to be obstructing the pavement, and yes you can get done for it, its nowt to do with the wheels, its with it overhanging and being in the way of pedestrians..
Moving your car untaxed, well as a self employed mechanic I do it all the time, providing its on its way to an mot or to a place where work is to be carried out on it, then you're ok, providing its insured of course

If you say something to someone in a polite manner without getting all arsey yourself why should there be a problem? I'm not siding with your neighbour though, they sound like your typical busy body, nothing better to do type of person, but such is life |

I'm a totally approachable person, if someone had said hey Nick could you tuck the van in a bit as we are struggling to get the buggy byit or it makes it hard to see to get out our drive, I would have sorted it there and then... I'm that sort of person... try to spend my life without treading on toes...

My last gripe and i'll leave this thread alone. If they clamped the Fiesta all clamps by law must be fitted to the drivers side front so the driver knows it's clamped and doesn't drive away with it on.
To do this surley the NCP people entered his drive without permission, is this not tresspass, or are driveways free to all?
