Went down to the car today after work. Realised I'd left the keys for it in the car. The car's at SWMBO's work. No car time today. Maybe tomorrow. ;D It's better to leave the keys near the car, you could always go there and do some acttually work... ;D

Didn't have much time, but needed to turn the car round so I can work on the driver's door window.
Decided to shoot a documentary. Very candid. Loving my car rocking the unintentional satin grey paint and special bird-poop "Shopping list" on the doors.
Ha.
I needed something to cheer me up about the car. Even approached SWMBO about it- apparently we might be going to the insurance office to see about insurance.
I need to get cracking.

I love this thread - I would have long since given up.......
I keep looking at obscure stuff on craigslist and then every time I come close to pulling the trigger I remember the pain you are going through......
and I recline my sofa and open another beer....

I love this thread - I would have long since given up....... I keep looking at obscure stuff on craigslist and then every time I come close to pulling the trigger I remember the pain you are going through...... and I recline my sofa and open another beer.... It's been slow and occasionally arduous. I have time though. I will admit I've been getting itchy fingers to drive it lately. Driving the daily up into the Tennessee mountains highlighted just how different the GTA feels. A lot lighter and nimble. It's a double-edged sword. On one hand if you buy some random old tat off CL you have an awesome vehicle. It may however also open up a world of pain... which needs to prove its worth, lol. It's not been costing me anything just sat there and not much is happening, apart from it collecting dirt and spiders. If it were coming out of my pocket all the time and being this awkward, I'd probably have seconds thoughts about the whole idea... --Phil

I bought it for the leather seats for my 164 but on the way home I realised that it could become a beginner drifter in it. It has 266998 kms and the speedo doesn't count since almost 2005 but it works like clock work, I'm a bit sad to wreck it... but someone will... Nice before starting check video... That's always good to know that everything's working for a change...

Made a shopping list this morning of bits that I need to get the car running and driving on the road.
Depending on if the parts come in on time and the weather's fine, I'm setting myself a loose personal deadline of a fortnight to get the car ready.
Today's shopping list included:
Passenger side halfshaft assembly (reman.) Rear brake springs, clips, pins etc Rear brake adjuster mechanism rebuild set Front caliper dust boots Front caliper hardware set Two new front spindle locknuts Stablilizer bar bushings New flexi hoses for brakes all round Fuel filter
I've got a radiator cooling fan thermostat on order from Napa, should be in on their next large delivery.
Not all of that is going on at once. I'm going to get new rear pistons for the brakes and either rebuild the current fronts or get a rebuilt pair, and do the entire brake system, including handbrake cables at the same time.
Right now the front dust boots will help stop any more dirt ingress, the caliper pins and sliders should help keep the calipers floating properly and the rear adjuster set should help keep the pedal where it needs to be- the rear brakes howled at me when I moved the car the other day as they are sticking. Most likely just corrosion but replacing the bits should help.

I just realised I spent more in one shopping spree for stuff than I did on the entire cost of the vehicle.
Brings total bill on the car to about $1600 so far to date.

Due to unforseen circumstances* today was an almost total loss.
I did dig out the Arduino and load the diagnostics program back on. I think I'm going to flex those computer programming brain cells and make it a little more graphical.
I want to determine in the next few days or so the correct byte for the ignition advance. Also hidden in there I'm told is the fuel:air ratio figure. Strobe timing light and multimeter ahoy.

* mother in law arrived, so I ended up having to make lunch etc., by the time that was over the daylight was nearly gone.

Good luck ;D Haha thanks You can always stop me and ask questions though! I do have a habit of rambling on and on about things- I think that's how this managed to get to 30 pages and I've not even driven the car on the road yet... --Phil

Ooh, a box. I like boxes, they sometimes have fun stuff in. Yes, it does have interesting stuff in. Let's unpack it and take a look: Top row left to right: Front caliper dust seal, front caliper dust seal, drum brake spring set (sure I clicked 2, need to order another), front flexi hose, fuel filter Bottom row: Rear brake self-adjuster L and R, front caliper hardware kit, rear flexi hose, front flexi hose The very bottom didn't actually come in the box, instead, Napa hadn't called me to let me know it was in- the new temperature sender unit for the radiator fan. Got a bunch more still in the mail, including some new locknuts for the ends of the driveshaft spindles, a rebuilt nearside (right!) driveshaft and the front anti-roll-bar bushes. That can all be done when the front is apart to do the driveshaft- can take the load off the anti roll bar to do the bushes and fit the new lower balljoints I have plus fit the driveshaft and do the front caliper dust seals. Again, the possibility of progress! SWMBO is at work this weekend so I have that time to be able to do the car --Phil

Good news, what I thought was a miscalculation appears to be the correct number of bits. the rear spring/peg/catch/bungy set I bought does both wheels and not just one side as I had feared. I didn't look at it closely enough because it was filthy!

Do you think you can find a similarly magical box of stuff for my Polo?
