Goverment plans to scrap 250,000 cars this year

Ive just had a article land on my desk say that Gordon is to consider to put into the budget next month a plan to give every owner of a 8yr old car that is above 150g in emissons £2,000 towards a new car so he can kick start the motor trade
The article goes on to say that 250,000 cars and 30,000 vans will be affected (and that means scrapped )

Bascially another way of getting older cars off our roads .
Cant see it happening thou can you

It's absolute curse word is what it is. The way things are you can get 2 grand off by walking in off the street and saying "Can I have 2 grand off please?". My local Saab dealer is offering up to 10 grand off pre-registered cars.

And of course,, scrapping 250,000 cars will have no environmental impact whatsoever will it.

why don't they just let people reduce the carbon footprint on the cars that allready exist . by giving the owners £2000 toward using public transport.... or buing a bike...

that way they don't need to make more cars therefor causing more environmental promlems

Bearing in mind that 86% (yes, that's the official figure) of new cars bought in the UK are manufactured abroad the Government (i.e, You and I as taxpayers) will largely be helping to kick start foreign car building industry. Any benefit to the UK car industry will be minimal.

it's never about the environment, it's about the money. Vauxhall have been doing this for years, and some pretty rare and roadworthy tin has been scrapped (once in the scheme they have to be scrapped). That haveing said, the part ex scheme is only against cars under a year old, so it says to me the buyers will either have to already have the remainder of the cost of the car in the bank (in which case why would they be driving some 8 year old shitter?) or get into debt. Er, wasn't it getting into debt that got the country into this mess in the first place?

It will only attract those who want/can afford a brand new car, which is luckily a small percentage of the population. The only real threat to classic cars if the government just simply offered owners £2.5k to drive thier cars to the scrap yard, and that ain't gonna happen!

Some good cars will be lost to this though, like natural selection the very old and the very young will believe the hype.

Scenario 1:
Little Jonny's gran has a mint 20 year old car sat in the garage, she's giving up driving and little Jonny has just got his license. She gives her car to him, but he want some plastic clio or corsa, so between him and his Dad (who will sign the HP) he cashes in the perfectly good classic car and get something that will last about a year.

Scenario 2:
Mr Smith has just retired. As he no longer has a family to tote about, and doesn't want to be getting his hands dirty with servicing any more, he cashes in the car he's had for 19 years from new and gets some plastic shopping car.

Scenario 3:
Young Mr and Ms Jones' family is growing. They are keen on the environment and keeping the world entact for the kids. So they scrap their 16 year old perfectly reliable and legal car for some Chelsea tractor, cos it's better for the environment isn't it?
