Ametech Engine Restore What was wrong with your engine? Did it work? Is it worth the money. I'm thinking of slinging a can in a Shogun V6 petrol I've just bought. Cheers people.

I'd avoid any oil additive like the plague. After learning how much it costs to test a particular oil additive pack (upwards of £400,000 per set of tests, with ALL need to be redone if even one single component is changed because things react in very odd ways)
Basically, there is no guarantee that whatever is in this Amtech stuff will be any good at all, let alone compatible with the hundreds of additives already in your engine.
Companies like Lubrizol spend many many millions of pounds every year ensuring the additive packs in oil are the very best they can be nowadays. Maybe 30 years ago, things like Slick 50 could be beneficial, but nowadays they will almost certainly do much more harm than good.
The best case scenario would be that the can contained some plain base oil stock. Atleast you'd be sure that it wouldn't react with an existing additive to turn your oil into lard!

might help on a old banger as a last resort , to get it through a auction or summet
i can only see it upping compression and quietening down any rattles because its like treacle
id sooner fix the problem properly if its a keeper

Thanks chaps. I bought the Shogun after it had been standing for 2 years. Doesn't look like it's been regularly started either. It's blowing a bit of blue smoke out, although the more I run it, it seems to be getting much better. I did an engine flush t'other day and did an oil and filter change. I think it just needs a good blast down the road, but difficult with no t&t Ametech as a very last resort then.

Well i'l buck the trend here, I had a 200tdi discovery, engine was in good fettle generally but a compression test showed one cylinder slightly lower than the rest.. not a huge amount 10% or so if memory serves. I used a can of it (by the way its a scary blue colour!) after about 600miles i redid the test and compression was up on that cylinder and all were equal. Now that could have been fluke/me/the tester etc etc. but the only change I ade in that time was the Ametech. So does it work.. dunno but maybe, that said its not cheap, choice is yours I guess. I kept the car for another 2000miles with no ill effects and the car is still going strong as far as I know.
