Vauxhall Viva HB gearboxes - £20 each

Havent a clue about them, just swapped them for my Taxi signs a while ago and still have them tripping me up, so here they are at only £20 each .....

Gearbox one, but they all look the same...

No seriously they look like HB ones, longer noses on HB and HC than HA and Chevette... also bell housing looks shorter than larger clutch HC's... thats my guess...

Here is the engien and box from Fungus the HB

Note the tail end is same length.

went through me HBOL's and some VX service books etc and here is a the list you need:

HA Gearbox


Note the short main shaft, its shorter than the gearstick shaft

HB / HC



Mainshaft is same length as Gearstick shaft.

There are variations of this gearboxes on HB / HC's;

Diff speedo drive gears for various models (tyre sixes and axle ratios etc)

Two diff size clutches, the smaller clutches (1159cc engines) fit inside all of these gearboxes, the larger (1256cc engines) don't always fit inside the bell housing of the earlier boxes (unless you use an angle grinder on the bellhousing inside the gearbox.

Chevette:




Very similar to the HA gearbox in that the mainshaft is shorter than the Gearstick shaft, note however the cranked gearstick (just swap them isusing on a HA) and the gearbox mount to crossmember is slightly diff, again just swap.

As far as I am aware the ratios inside the boxes are the same across the range from HA to Chevette, and MPH per 1000 PRM changes were done by changing the rear axle ratios and tyre / wheel sizes. (That will be why my HA says 70mph when its doing 50 then )


SO in summary any box will fit anycar, but your prop shaft will be the wrong length if you are not careful
