Sorry for the long delay, but here's another update. Apart from resting after the op, there have been distractions - two 240s bought recently! Anyway, onto the 164... DoorsWork continues. The remaining the chrome trims are fitted I refurbished the door handles The top and bottom of the handle surrounds often bend inwards, as seen here, but this can be carefully straightened using a vice and blocks of wood Fitted window scrapers. These are made from later type 240 interior scrapers ScreenAlso, I am part way through fitting the windscreen I bought a '79 245GLE, thinking of a possible restoration, but it proved to be too rusty. However, it had a nearly-new screen which it donated to the 164. It took several hours of careful cutting to break the seal, but I got the screen out unbroken. Then another few hours to clean off the old bonded joint Finally ready for installation The tinted sunstrip matches the 164 paint colour very well! Carbond on the screen lip to ensure adhesion over a good surface area Fitting, using various spacers to position the glass as the carbond sets. This was a hateful, messy and stressful job. Many thanks to Steve who helped a lot and kept me calm! Part way through fitting the stainless steel trim. This is difficult because it doesn't fit the screen aperture well, and I am bonding it in place having deleted the original Volvo rust-causing metal clips That's all for now. Cheers John

My dad had exactly the same car when I was 4. I used to play in it. Seeing the pictures and the dashboard near the begining reminided me of the whole thing. Same colour, same interior. We had an aftermarket module installed under the dash to provide a variable intermittiant wiper.

Well, it's been a very long time coming (due to the distraction of building the 245 turbo) but here at last is an update on the 164RS project! No work done on the car today, but a big step forward in other ways... Getting the car out in the sunshine was partly a motivational exercise, but there was also a technical reason. Under fluorescent light in the workshop, I can see some patchiness in the basecoat. I was worried that this might look worse out in daylight, and might necessitate repainting the car again. We had been waiting for a bright sunny day to carefully assess the paint. To my surprise, it's good news! The patchiness is all but invisible in strong natural light. There are a couple of bodywork defects I need to correct (e.g. a crack in the finish, and sinkage on the roof, but it does not need to be painted again. A massive relief! We decided to do a line-up for the photos, with my 245 and Steve's GLT I have some tasks in progress on the 245 which will take another few months, but later in the summer I will be fully back onto work to progress the 164. That colour is gorgeous. Sorta classy and custom at the same time.
Sent you a PM BTW. Would love to see these on a nice sunny day like today!

Looks brilliant in the sunshine. Your ability to progress more than one project at once always impresses.

Hi, I read this from start to finish today ( quiet day at the office) : ) So inspiring, your determination and attention to detail is exceptional. Not the sort of car I would normally be interested in but your RS twist really works for me. Love the honest ups and downs we all know and experience. Fingers crossed that you can excercise it's legs on an autobahn soon. Wonderful paint job, I thought I cannot do that but think I will have a go now. Keep up the exemplary work it is so worth it. Nick

Thanks for all the positive comments folks, much appreciated. Shock horror! Progress on the 164! Ste motivated me by re-organising my shambolic parts storage, meaning we could actually find some parts to refit to the car. Finding the rear quarter window chrome trims meant the glass could be refitted. And finding the short bolts for the window frames allowed Ste to fit those. Because these are converted 240 doors, some adjustments were needed to bolt holes to enable the frames to line up properly. The final tweaks will need to be made after the rubber seals and door edge strips are fitted. Now we have restarted on the car, there will be more progress before too long John
