Firstly, I very much doubt that the P.O. will accept a printout of an emailed copy, I've tried it numerous times to no avail. Secondly, check that your details have made it onto the database. Last time I bought an un-taxed car, I insured it on Tuesday (and got email confirmation) - when I tried to tax it online the following Saturday, it was still showing as uninsured. Had a very nerve-wracking 300 mile drive home! There's a website which will tell you straight away (I forget the address). Can't see the difference between a home printed version and the ones we print at work myself - go to another P.O. Insurers have up to 14 days to put your details onto MID, hence the delay.

I had a similar issue and drove the car with no tax (but with valid MOT & Insurance), the DVLA made it impossible to tax the thing.

A couple of years ago I bought a MKVI Escort as cheap don't give a ................ wheels. The first time I drove it was 1 December. My aim was to drop my kids at school, tax it at the PO, then go to work. Unfortunately, the area near the school was the subject of a clampdown on VED dodgers that day. The dibble have a zero-tolerance approach in those circumstances and I copped a £200 fine (of which they refund £120 when you tax it). I had MoT and insurance docs with me (and the completed VED form) but no dice.
If I hadn't had my credit card with me they would have lifted the car on the spot. I had to go to the recovery yard to reclaim my £120 and you wouldn't beleive the stuff they had impounded from a mint Oak Green Golf GTI to a 2 year old Merc.
The bottom line to all this is that I won't drive a car with no tax now unless I really have no option. By no option I mean that someone has a severed arm and I need to get them to A&E.

Last time I taxed my Anglia I didn't have a cover note and printed out the one they emailed me, which was accepted. It wasn't on the system or anything, they just looked at it and clicked yes on the screen or whatever.

I got a postcard from DVLA this morning (no nice piccy of the wales coast or nothing, lol) telling me that its now LEGAL to drive up to a week into the new month and still be displaying the expired disk in the windscreen. This is presumably cos they cant rely on our shambolic postal system to actually deliver purchaced online tax before the 1st of the month.

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

but if the tax has been paid it will be on the 'computers' so if ANPR cameras spot you it won't make a difference if you have an old tax disc as they will know. best of just waiting out, although may be a few weeks, you know how royal mail are

meh. I still think beer labels should count I was serious about the clampdowns and fines being INSURANCE based tho. Never had a car confiscated for lack of VED yet. edit:joem83 - glad the magic wand worked, mate. Which reminds me, did the flying anglia require taxing? wasn't on the road.... lol

Firstly, I very much doubt that the P.O. will accept a printout of an emailed copy, I've tried it numerous times to no avail. I can't see why you had a problem, I'm insured with Swiftcover, which is completely web-based, and you can ONLY print your documents out yourself, they don't post/e-mail you anything.

I was under the impression that a hard copy of the Certificate of Insurance had to posted to you, but the rest could be emailed. That's what 'eBike' told me last year anyway.

PO are a pain in the bum lol, Directline refuse to send cover note over email! Our printer at work does better quality prints than directline's covernotes lol.

Seriously, try another Post Office. For one that won't take an e cert, there is one that will. They make up the rules as they go along.
