Hi Guys, Bought a van on Monday night, got it insured, it's MOT'd but it isnt currently taxed. Is there anyway I can get the thing taxed before tomorrow if my cover note doesnt come through? It's so annoying that you need a bit of paper to say it's insured when all the systems actually have the insurance status on it. I don't really want to chance driving it back untaxed as it's nearly 20 miles away Cheers Joe

Unfortunately not on a car that is new to you. If you were already the registered keeper and V5C was in your name, you could tax it online.
Only option is if the seller still has it insured, they could tax it and you pay them.

It's just ghay, the insurance certificates that you get would be so easy to fake, they don't even have a watermark in them! Surely in this day and age they could just use the online system if no paperwork. jeez lol.
Anyone in sheffield have a trade policy that would like to earn a tenner lol

There's always the Delboy-style 'tax in post' note in the window.

I just printed mine out and away I went

I'd say if you are insured, go for it. No tax isn't a hanging offence (no insurance is...) and you do get a little leeway from the men in blue if you honestly have just bought it - they will be chuffed that you got insurance before driving it! Get the disk as soon as you have the paperwork, buy the tax back to 1st of this month and all is fine. DVLA start getting picky and wanting to confiscate the car after its been untaxed for a whole month, and the car confiscating clampdowns are more about insurance than tax (although no tax is a good way of spotting the uninsured)

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

have the previous owners a tax renewal letter? can use that online along with V5 unfortunately, if you do that on line the tax disc will get posted to the ol' owner as that is the last address on their database. I have an online policy for my daily, I can make changes 24/7 and print new certs whenever i want.quite handy that.

Firstly, I very much doubt that the P.O. will accept a printout of an emailed copy, I've tried it numerous times to no avail. Secondly, check that your details have made it onto the database. Last time I bought an un-taxed car, I insured it on Tuesday (and got email confirmation) - when I tried to tax it online the following Saturday, it was still showing as uninsured. Had a very nerve-wracking 300 mile drive home! There's a website which will tell you straight away (I forget the address).

As SOC said, I would go for it. How far is it out of tax? Due this month or the month before? If it's this month, you can tax it back to the 1st anyway, so it would have to be a pretty rabid copper who would take the car off you. Any more than part of a month they get a bit shirty...

the 'in post' note works better when accompanied with a recorded delivery slip if its dodgy. even if it is the V5 or another cars tax you posted away
