So I've finally gotten round to starting the Spring clean of my Golf (yes, yes I know I'm late ). I'm aiming to have it nice and shiney all over by the Retro Show in a couple of weeks... I spent an hour last night cleaning the inside of the tailgate and the hatch area, removed loads of excess wax from the passengers door shut and generally made a good start! Handy hint: Morrisons shoe wax/scuff cover is EXCELLENT for blacking up bumpers/trim on your car - those of you that have black bits and not chrome - dries nicely with no patches or streaks, doesn't leave a residue and is only 85p a bottle! The sponge applicator is a bit big for some areas, squeeze some onto a clean rag! Anyone got any top tips for cleaning? I'm going to start on the dashboard switchgear/vents next, toothbrush and warm soapy water at the ready!

I'm well into my car cleaning. Bit of a tart really! If your serious about it, jack the car up, take the wheels off, with a jet wash clean all the curse word off from beneath the arches, and put plastic shine on the black arch liners, finishes a car off IMO. Remember, when doing the body work, to concentrate on the sills too! A lot of people miss this. Interior, take the seats out! because it's impossible to get into some places with seats in situe. Cotton Buds are good for detailing the interior too btw. The bodywork, never use fairy liquid, because of the salt content, its a great de-waxer, e.g. if you want to strip your layers of polish/wax off and start again, but if not, stick with Autoglym bodywork shampoo. For a top don result, give the golf 2 layers of autoglym super resin, and then a coat of this stuff called p21s, to give your paint a wet look finish Full of tips: www.autopia-carcare.com/Car cleaning products, can get p21s from here: www.seriousperformance.co.uk/sp/products/shampoo.phpHope thats helps. Adam.

Excellent advice! I used to work part time as a valeter, so I knew about fairy liquid etc but good info all the same!
I use Zymol wax on the Golf - but i haven't done it for about 5 months or so. The shine is amazing when it's finished, brings back the red colour instead of the orangey that it normally is!

Darren, I know a few people from the PSOC that are concours nutters, that spend too much time making their pugs look top don, as in importing products from the US, grands worth! they've tested everything out, hence my suggestion for p21s, they recommended the serious performance website to me, they rate the 'poor boy' products on there. I mentioned Zymol once, after all it's a well respected brand, and some of the ranges are very expensive! I said about the zymol polish they sell in halfords, asking whether its any good etc. they told me it's re labelled turtle wax they all choose autoglym every time, basically they say the 'consumer ranges' of zymol and meguiars are over rated. They are the daddies when it comes to detailing etc, so I take notice, their cars do the speaking! Regarding the fairy liquid, wasn't trying to state the obvious, but I didn't realise that until about 6 months ago, i used to put a small squeeze in with my shampoo, for extra suds! that serious performance website seems to be very good VFM though!

Sorry! Didn't mean to sound like I was dissing your advice I've been looking at those links, interesting stuff! One of the VW guys I know has some sort of 'clay bar' that he uses on his Corrado with amazing results... I can't believe people pay £1000 or so on polish! Incredible! I mean, the Golf is tidy, but not that tidy!!

lol, I didn't mean 'don't knock my advice', what I was trying to say was, 'I wasn't trying to talk to you like you know curse word all' ;D Yeah totally agree, wouldnt spend that on valeting products, the serious performance website has all you need, I'm not gonna be going in for any comps! Yeah the clay bar seems to be good, from what I've heard, not tried it yet, they sell it on that site Theres a place I know that does tyre dressing for £15, for 5 litres worth, not sure how long it lasts but its worth a try at that price! they are web based if you want details.
