not having a moan, simply asking what the general consensus of acceptability is here. I have a 1996 merc and have just sold a 1994 passat, both quite modified(body/paint/wheels/tyres/suspension), and I didnt post readers rides threads on ether, as I think they're too new to be acceptable as a 'retro' car. ive recently posted one for a 1990 car (which id class as borderline acceptable), but only because its a very late model, the actual design is a good 10 years older as a pickup, and more like 15 as a conventional car. yet I'm seeing the whole thing cluttered up with readers rides thread for what I would call 'modern' cars- some less than 10 years old. its especially annoying when a lot of these cars are essentially stock! I was under the impression retro kinda meant 'appreciating classic', filling the gap between tired old shitter just hanging on to its MOT every year, that you see a lot of in shall we say 'low income areas', and true classic car. (mk3 escort would be a prime example, 5 years ago it would have been a sheddy old runabout, now theyve ridden out the storm and become acceptable) I'm not saying stock cars are unacceptable either, just I always got the vibe this place veered more towards modified vehicles. I think its rather unfair that classic/retro motorcycles get shunted over to readers other mods, yet its ok to have 1999 cars with readers rides threads, as a 1999 car is NOT retro, no matter what spin you try to put on it. so what am I saying? not sure really, just typing down a few thoughts on the matter, and would like to see what everyone else thinks, your 2p if you like does anyone think its about time for some restrictions on what can be posted as a readers ride, given the scope of the site?

It's averaging one per page
Pg1 1999 Punto Pg 2 1996 Ashtray Pg 3 1994 Pissrat
Just going by the dates
I've been letting them run - if they weren't of interest they'd get no reply and sink like a stone
Like the forum it's self policing most of the time and bad posts with no retro related content tend to sink quickly

does anyone think its about time for some restrictions on what can be posted as a readers ride, given the scope of the site? I tend to agree with what Dez is saying, but how about a seperate section for the slightly more modern cars, maybe a modern retro/classic section?

I think anything after like 1983/4 is a "late model" so I'm well sunk LOL.
EDIT: too many sections dilutes participation.

I think it works well as is, but i might be one of the offenders,, i recently posted a thread about my nearly stock 89 polo so that tends to be border line.... its more just a thread that I'm gonna add more pics to to show how its progressed since buying it... Ive gotta admit sifting thru alot of what id call moderns becomes annoying sometimes, but it seems to have got better lately? Theres things on the general chat board that annoy me more lets put it that way

i dunno, if its an interesting (modified!) new car then fine but if your gonna post the usual 1996 standard boremobile then you ought not to be on here in my eyes!
The forum is full of curse word, i don't understand why people post it all! All the good posts get swamped with junk and the place feels old and stale. I talked to loads of people about it the other weekend and they all agreed. Still a great bunch of people on here but i and many others just cant be arsed with trawling through it everyday!
The whole, 'oh its ok, they will just sink' attitude makes it worse. Bit late now tho really.

Tbh you'll never be able to have an age-related 'cut-off'. One example: mine's a '91 with a fairly modern-ish shape, yet has one of the most basic engines I've ever worked on (carb-fed, manual choke ) in fact, you could probably strip the entire car apart using one socket set and a couple of spanners. Plus, it's looking more like a shed every day ;D Add to that the genuinely retro-styled newer stuff (VW vans, smaller japanese cars, eastern bloc tat, etc etc) and it all gets a bit blurry round the edges.

I'd bin at least half of them,.. but I can bet there is only concensus on one or two... which will get binned (literally). If I bin the others I get people going off in a hufty,.. if I don't bin them,.. I get people going off in a hufty,.. if I sit somewhere in the middle... guess what...

All interesting points. In my view - over-policing kills forums incredibly quickly, in the same fashion as under policing makes them ridiculous. The way I look at it - the more participation the better. I don't read any of the modern threads really, but I have posted one up before, a few in fact - all 90's Minis. A 50 year old design, but I had to have 90s ones for insurance reasons. I still think a 1998 Mini is "retro"

ii appreciate your dilemma HTW...... damned if you do, damned if you don't eh? do we get to place bets on which get binned? time to speak out and be a bit harsh I suppose- 1996 escort van. has various mods, but its more 'local cRuZr forum' than retro rides. 1994 astra. it may be for charity, but its still a shitter and a waste of forum bandwidth. 1999 rover. if I want to see one with no mods except a set of halfords wheels lobbed on (which hasnt actually even been done yet), id go down tescos carpark. I was going to say the '1994' citroen smurf' cos the title annoys me, but come page 3 and its actually getting somewhere with the saxo vtr bits being shoved in, so I think ive changed my mind on that. I think mx5s are borderline, no matter how modded they are. yes they're a good car/handle well etc, but they're not exactly uncommon and are rock bottom price wise at the mo (hence loads turning up on here I guess). its not like the internet is short of mx5 owners forums either. there was also a mondeo on there recently. they're an ugly design that hasnt aged well, and don't have an once of retro in them. I don't actually have a problem with a lot of late model stuff, say '90s minis and beetle as they're basically little different to the 70s versions, and 'modern-retros' like figaros and stuff, I think they do kinda have a place here, but it is nigh on impossible to have a set of rules to say whats eligible or not. I am actually thinking of the forum as a whole when I say this, and its 'online rep' for want of a better term. if it gets cluttered up with loads of people posting unsuitable readers rides, it dilutes the good stuff, and I feel this place is about quality not quantity, thats why I make it my online 'home'........ think of it like a pub- if it gets loads of underage kids hanging round, it gets a rep for it, and it may force the old regulars to find somewhere else to drink as its not what they're looking for anymore....

I kinda sorta agree, but I've always viewed this forum as not strictly "retro" but "interesting"
My car isn't particularly old, a 1994 Toyota Soarer, but it's "interesting" When was the last time you saw one? What do Toyota/Lexus make these days that is similar? A design that is ageing well in my opinion, and it still turns heads for a 15 year old car.

Ultimately, once a forum starts getting massive recognition, it's an easy slide to either fill up with sub-standard bilge, or get a rep as a haunt for narrow-minded ar5es. Not impossible to avoid either of those images, but damn hard to keep a happy medium, and people will get upset whatever stance you take. If I, personally, had to choose which members to 'please', I'd go with the longest standing/highest contributing... but then of course you'd end up with a stagnant pool of a community with a possible shortage of fresh ideas.

Unfortunately, my car is stock, as all the mods for it are $$$$$$. I keep looking at wheels, and the obligatory stick though.
The other cars are Ex-cars, and nobody wants to read about my 2005 Honda Accord.

I think there should be a sub section (if possible) of readers rides for cars made after 1990 or under 20 years old somthing of that description because if you don't want to see the 1994 escort van (sorry for using youas an example) then you don't go on the under 20 year old cars. Thats my oppinion.
