Hi new to this forum or any for that matter been trying to make a post with pics and failing, poor computer skills just can't seem to figure it out by looking at it like you can with mechanical objects. Edit might be winning, maybe. Ha, I done did it, not too retro I know, in fact the most modern car I've ever owned, well if you don't count the rusty tranny. Miss that one but miss,s didn't want it as first car plus was a bit fed up with pushing it as was a hill top starter on many occasions. Edit just bought it back for £150 and the significant other loves it more than ever OK, more pics So there it is noting special but cheap and reliable transport for the last year and a bit 20,000 miles has wanted got nothing other than oil for the engine and yes the tank too. (note front arch gap fail in above 2 pics) - stick hitting on cards Mods so far: wheels off old polo, black painted badges, tow bar/bike rack, roof rack and box as well, oh yeah and gti tints for the back from local breakers after I put the bike rack through one of the originals loading it in the boot. Am still not sure about these, would have preferred to tint the originals but as said broke um and this is what the scrappies had. Suspension clearly needs sorting in more ways than 1, was hoping the blown shocks would have been condemned on last mot giving a good excuse to sort it out - time being short and 'if the wheels still go round' attitude reigning supreme. The misses likes this lots more than the shiny new corsa she learned in and the boy calls it Lightning (the hot shot rookie race car from the movie) so I guess its run it till it dies then. It's done 130 odd thousand miles and motor still strong so fingers crossed.

see at the start of your post you have done this: [/img] If you edit your post and put a single link to a picture in the middle of those tags like this: [ img]http://link to your picture and it should work. (you'll have to do this for each picture), alternativly if you cant get it to work, then post the best link you can and i'm sure someone (like me) or possibly a mod will help out. (if you don't have your pictures loaded to the internet then you will need to do that, photobucket is a a good site to use and postimage is a really easy one if you cant figure out photobucket) photobucket.com/www.postimage.org/also have a read of of this post as you need to edit your title... retrorides.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readersrides&action=display&thread=35067Hope that helps, i'm intrigued by 'golf and granny'!

Many thanks to all who helped get me started on this here thread And if any offence is felt by those who feel it ain't retro/cool enough i'm sorry 'bout that but feel there is something on this board for everyone and that is one of the reasons RR rocks. Peas, out.

First things first, props when props due; MASSIVE THANKS TO CTISTU2The mans a star, he answered the call for shocks and springs with a offer of free gti shocks and springs if I could come and collect. No time was wasted on the trusty rusty cb500 and of to Littlehampton. Had to basically force some beer money in his hand for his trouble had a quick chat, chucked goods in the not quite cavernous enough courier bag and lashed them on the back of the bike and hit the road. Took it easy for the first 1/2 mile then got bored and realized they weren't gonna fall of so gave it some beans. Its good how people make room when your filtering with a dangerous looking load, was that courteous driving or fear of panel damage- I'd like to think the former anyways back in London quick smart. Back home on the kitchen floor - bangin' ;D

Right finally pulled finger out today, have been making excuses about waiting for shock mounts working out what to do and so on. Operation clean up Should of done it at work in the parts wash but suds and washing up pad done the job OK Cleaned the springs too, take it these are vw's factory marks for chopping then always wondered what the paint blobs are for. Uh oh baby crying, bottle and bed for you misses Off to nursery to pick up the boy, sort them out lunch which gives time for..... Boy see's the brush come out with predictable recourse, why of course you can do some painting. He done a great job with the bargain bucket £2.50 paint and none on the school jumper too which saves me a heap o' trouble . So next step is find the grinder and chop chop chop. Quick Q, as standard the bottom of the spring is very slightly bent up so it lies a little flatter on the strut should I ; A re create this, and B do it cold with big 'mer or add some heat and gentle pressure?

Is this a 90bhp TDi ?? if so, you can make these go very quickly indeed !! I've got a '97 TDi coming to my stable soon, slammage and high boost on veg oil being the general theme.

Sadly not, its a non-turbo povo spec, keep fit windows no central locking but does have aftermarket sunroof, oh yeah . Have heard allot through this forum about making turbo derv's fast but noting about non-turb's and can't find any of them cheap plug in super chip (oil) thingys either. Never mind although it would be nice if it was quicker the key thing here is chirpy cheap cheap motoring

Those non-turbos are alright, I had one for a while, it'd sit all day at highly illegal speeds on the motorway and was nippy enough round the doors. The engines are utterly bomb-proof, just a shame the bodywork on mine was disappearing at an accelerated rate. Yours looks pretty tidy. Plug in superchip? It's a completely mechanically controlled engine. The only thing you could do is turn the fuelling up on the pump, but I doubt if it'll make a huge difference. There is some info below about twiddling with the fuelling and maximum engine speed on the Bosch VE pump, the car in the piece a Peugeot turbo diesel but the basics are the same. autospeed.com/cms/A_109306/article.html

mr_cubicle, Yep, it does go pretty good once you've built a good head of steam and like you say will do those lose your license in one hit kinda motorway speeds even fully loaded. Thanks for pointing out the now obvious reason why you can't get a plug in chip, man me so dumb had seen um for the tdi and thought cheap power, WANT. Fuel pump will probably not be messed with as turning it up sounds like it might hit my wallet at the pumps but thanks for the link The pictures flatter it to be honest and its got plenty of fast spreading rust (put finger through wing yesterday). Still, gotta have a go at welding one day ;D

Thanks to all who have posted on this thread some kind words on this slightly crusty golf, the first picture's do flatter it as there is a few issues with bodywork, mainly nearside rear door keeps going pink but worst of all serious grot growing at an alarming rate on wings and shock horror spreading to the sill on the nearside . Progress today, front shocks and springs sorted ;D. Took longer than it should which is a recurring theme with my 'should be fairly easy' mechanical escapades. Part of this was my own fault for not having the correct tools but was mainly down to being sent the wrong top mounts despite being assured they would be fine . Tool improvisation can be fun but sometimes infuriating and always takes time to think through but having wrong parts arrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhh. Luckily local factors had some top mounts in and i.ve had to use my original springs and top caps with the gti struts. OK some photos inch's of fail /4x4 levels of lift 16 years of rust and grime on the strut to swivel hub bolts-'son fetch the peco breaker bar' More chopage, one coil-fit-no good-remove-two coils-fit-jack stuck under car-thats better The end result firmer better ride + far better stance, shall be lopping just one coil from the rear when I fit them as quite liking the rake. No hard slam sorry folks but I'm happy with the result and should be fine for its daily duties as familybanger/load lugger/tow vehicle
