Sad day indeed. All because the government doesn't get tax on second hand cars. Nothing to do with the environment.

Sorry to continue this and I'm sure it's bound for the whinge bin, but it's bloody madness and really p!sses me off. Our government are driven by businesses that are unviable. If they were they wouldn't need this godforsaken scheme in the first place.

bring it on i say,90% of the scrappage cars are utter dross,not very often you get a nice one,its the folk who trade the cars that should be getting moaned that,but i can understand why they do it.

like the dad today who bought his daughter who has just had a baby,they traded in their 90k p reg 106 that was a total shed and got a corsa that should be safer,more reliable and easier for her to drive.

still its good for business ,every cloud and all that.

nice so he traded a curse word car for another curse word car and a load of debt oh yeah well thought out that. for the record anyone that found a 106 hard to drive shouldn't be on the bloody road . still at least he didn't own a retro like some of these other gullible brainless saps that are falling for this load of tosh the government are spinning in the name of saving jobs just who is it that's paying for it though .....that's right the TAX payer is paying for it and will be for years to come 2k off my more like 2k on after its all been payed for

Don't you work in a new car dealership?

It's terrible news for the people who can't afford to spend much on a car - the sub-£1000 market is pretty dry at the moment... out of those 200,000 cars scrapped, and 100,000 coming, I am willing to bet that a lot of them would have lived on for another few years.

It's galling to subsidise those who can afford to buy a new car, and an industry which doesn't deserve special treatment more than any other...

I think its just completely wrong. I hate the fact that a car could survive fo 20-40 years then just end up getting scrapped for a box full of plastic.Why cant the cars be auctioned off to reclaim some of are tax money.Even some of the newer cars like the ford focus, Ka's, golfs, pumas. I'm only young so 10 years ago before I turned to retro cars, when these cars came out they were the cars I wanted but could not afford.To me when I see them I still class them as new cars.

If they keep putting more money into this all car fans should start to arrange go slow protests, untill at least classic, rare or mint cars get exempt. I would love to drive in a retro rides convoy at 10mph.Not only would it be a protest but it would also be a chance to see hundreds of old cars together

btw power steering does make it easier for a young gal.

i take it you think all these scrappage cars are decent motors,most of them i wouldn't drive to the end of the road.
not everybody who drives actually likes cars and with the current rate of vat,the goverment still makes a profit on cars over £7600 and they do expect to make £100 million out of this so were not paying for it really.

btw the cheap car market will still be there,but it will be 4 year old picanto's and panda's.

the whole scrappage scheme is a joke and I certainly don't support the artifical drip feeding of car dealerships with tax money.

whilst at the same time the motorist is constantly hammered by the government, becuase cars murder kids, poison the environment yada yada. the government needs to get its priorities straight.

Er, those arent cheap, unless you think £2500-£3500 is cheap. Cheap to me is a sub £500 runabout.

It's a bit daft because anyone who buys a second hand car is recycling in my opinion and should be applauded. When you think fo the inginuity involved with keeping old cars on the road and the using of second hand parts we should all be congratulated really.

Going back to the scrappage scheme though, can you blame some people? I expect a few of 'our' type of cars will get crushed but would you pay two grand for a 1994 Escort or 1991 Peugeot 205 1.1 or whatever? I wouldn't so and can't really blame people for getting a good price against a new car.

Don't forget that the cars we drive were once considered modern rubbish in their day and I bet there was loads of fifties/sixties/seventies stuff part-ex'd and crushed by dealers in years gone by. The only difference now is that the govornment are accelerating the scheme.
