That's awful - really sad to see that. However, I too was worried that we had lost another person, so I'm glad to see you're still in the land of the living.

So sorry to see those pictures and hear of MIB's terrible fate Mark.
Although all your builds are an inspiration, as someone working to put an e21 back on the road I've always thought of MIB as a real example of how good an e21 can look (always fantastic despite being a daily driver) and something to work towards.
And if I had a pound for every time I've heard "have you seen that orange one on retro rides" when I've mentioned I have an e21 I'd be very rich by now.
I only hope you find a way to use this horrible set back and build something even better.

2 words. AGREED VALUE. I hope you had one, it would be a massive kick in the balls if you don't get back a good amount for this. Sorry to see it, burnt out cars always make me sad, especially this one. Any plans on a replacement or is the subject still a bit raw?

its a real shitter, but bringing a car back from a fire is real hard. I know someone who painted a burnt car 4 times before giving up and flogging it, as he couldnt get the paint to take properly and not react. he thought it was a mixture of residue from the plastics that had burnt into the metal, and the foam supressant that the fire service used to put it out that did it.
and thats before you get into things like melted wiring looms, all the engine plastics being melted, and the interior etc. a dash fire that spread to the engine bay is probably the worst.
in terms of time/cost/workload, the best option is probably insurance payout, salvage rights, take whatevers savable and reshell. not sure if I could face having to do it either though.

That is heartbreaking for me to look at so I can only imagine how you must feel after doing so much to the car. Don't let it kill your MoJo though.

I really appreciate all the comments guys. If ever I was to know what it meant to be gutted it's now. I simply cannot convey how much this has hit me. I just never really envisaged being without MIB and turned down some pretty generous offers. It was quite simply MY car. What I am honestly touched by, is just how supportive people have been. Especially by those folks, such as yourselves, who know only too well just how a car can transcend the metal and plastics that go to make it up. Yes, I am insured but doubt it will be an amount to equal what has been spent over the past 3 years. It really isn't about the money. I will find something to replace MIB eventually. I have something in mind but not sure I can raise the asking price yet. Time will tell I guess? If it comes off, rest assured it will be orange and a step further than what went before. Thanks again guys.

A bit late to this Mark, but another that can't say how terrible I feel for you.... I'd be in a total mess and I only have wrecks! I've followed the work in your thread and between you and Robor I ended up with my first bavarian tin, it's bloody infectious.... ;D
Very best of luck in the hunt for the replacement (or raising the funds in the meantime). Looking forward to the continuing saga with the next generation.

Thanks for the comments guys. We think a short somewhere in the dash caused the fire. There's no saving MIB sadly. I feel physically sick just thinking about it. Thanks again for the support. Mark What a sad end for a tidy little Bimmer I really don't wanna look at those pics, they make me unhappy.

Oh my word...!!! I just don't know what to say... I've seen that car a few times and every time I saw it I had to roll my tongue back in my mouth...!
I am truly gutted for you, this is an epic loss and I really cannot imagine how you must feel about it. All I can say is maybe this means you can make a better, faster, stronger 3-series at some juncture...
This car will never be forgotten, it was far too good for that...

If you do get it back to salvage anything remember to ignore all the people who will say that there will be hydrofluoric acid produced and you shouldn't touch burnt out cars. It's complete BS.

Cant imagine how you must feel now. Think i would cry if it was my own car. Really sad to see something wich took years to build to be destroyed in seconds.

I can only re-iterate what everyone else has said but Oh..my...god. So sorry to see that, my sincere condolences, I can't even imagine to begin what you must be feeling. Jaw to the floor just looking at the pics.
I've always enjoyed reading the updates on this car. All the very best with whatever direction you choose to move in next.
