What are peoples views on banger racing? Personally i don`t mind losing mass produced junk or cars that have no historical importance but an Austin 3 (1 of 9992 made) litre on: www.edwardlloyd.de/banger_racing.htm

They have no soul these people. OK if the car really is a wreck with no really salvageable bits, but I've seen bangers with straight panels before that just makes me weep. The breakers are full of suitable vehicles for this pursuit as well, leave the classics alone!

You're right, it is criminal. Ok fair enough if the cars completely knackered, or nothing special. Who's gonna miss a MK3 Granada? The pointless destruction of classic cars!

But look at it another way.....
Remember the cars of yesterday that at the time we considered worthless coz they were as common as mondeo's ?
Now we see examples on ebay and we go wow a'int seen one of those for ages.. Like the Fiat on one of these threads.
One day someones gonna come on here and say
"What a find on ebay, a Mondeo ! whens the last time you saw one of those ?"
Save all the cars from the clutches of banger races Make them fix up total loss cars that would never have gone on the road again.
Just a thought ;D

Going to stick my neck out here...... I don't have problem with it. People can do what they want with their own car. (how many times has an 'armchair enthusiast' told you you've ruined your car by modifying it?). Most of the cars that get raced would never be restored-if they were any good they would be rescued. There are more old cars around than there are people to restore them.... look at 'Rust In Peace' in Practical Classics every month. cars that are bangered may look good, but we of all people should know what a coat of paint can do..... Just my opinion, for what it's worth.

... the only injury I sustained was a bumped head when I let the seatbelt of without realizing the car was upside down and that's not really the car's fault.

Hopefully parts removed from bangers are used to help keep other cars in better condition on the road

Good point mattblack.
Guess I was looking at an ideal world situation. Would be nice if more classics survived, but for that to happen someone would have to be prepared to store these current boring euro boxes for the future when they will gain classic status due to their rarity.

Err, actaully, I think banger racers need to be vaguely roadworthy to be allowed to race. They're not gonna let you race something with no floor are they? There may not be many safety rules in bangers, but I believe that is one of them

But there's a world of difference between puting a new floor in a 'banger' and doing the same to a car that's going back on the road......

I got no problem with banger racing i used to do it myself but i do have a problem with the orgernisers put up a prize for the rarest and best turned out cars as it does encourage some of the banger boys to go out and steal rare cars that are in good condition and belive me it does happen allot

i can agree if they were mk2 fiestas of metros, but when people smash up perfectly drivable cars, it just brings a tear to my eye. the best ones are the reliant robin ones tho, you really gotta c it. i can c y people do it tho. as we all say "they don't make um like they use to!!!" new cars are made to crumple under inpact where as old ones are made to fight. perfect example is when some cow went into the dolly. i own the smallest dent in the bumper and she owns a written off car!!!!

True, but if it's possible fo bodge a passable reapair for thre scrutineers, then it's probably equally possible to do a proper job and put it back on the road. It's just that they don't care
