I knew of the name Panhard, but I didn't really know what they made. I didn't know they were French, and I didn't know that they made some really beautiful cars! My journey of discovery began when I found this resto, whilst looking for inspiration for the Bond... ^ Little details like this made me suspect Panhard weren't British as I thought, as the little design touches seem so French! Then I started looking around the interwebs to see what else this company produced... ZOMG! I honestly didn't think there was a more beautiful car than the Citroen DS, but the Panhard 24 is just stunning! It definitely gives the DS a run for its money in the looks department, I think. These also float my boat... So yeah. I didn't know about Panhard at all yesterday, and now I do!

^That^ looks like a cross between your car and a Porsche 356. That's not a bad thing. ;D ^That^ is where Fiat got their idea for the Barchetta door handles which are such a lovely, stylish and tactile thing to use compared to conventional door handles. VV Barchetta handle VV Thanks for posting those up. New to me as well and I'm in total agreement on the '24'....such a beautiful car. I had a little off moment when I browsed over the shots of the cream one and the green one.

I love Panhards, mad as a box of frogs (excuse the pun....).
Panhard were bought out by Citroen in 1965. The first job the new managment gave to the Panhard design team was to redesign the 2CV which had by then been in production for seventeen years. Their design proposal, after some fine-tuning by Citroen, was launched in August 1967 as the Dyane. ;D

One of the PC boys bought one a while back. This was it at the Stoneleigh resto show in '08, having been transported sideways in a van. They're an aluminium monocoque and I thought the best thing to do with this shell would have been to sit it one a suitably modified aircooled VW floorpan ;D Any news on this one Mr Jones? Do love the DB cars too. Just looked it up on Wiki and while they were based on Panhard mechanicals they were made by a separate company. Here's one we saw at Retromobile also in '08 which is where I firest learnt of their existence. and I think this is also one, displaying some beautiful restoration work.

They're great looking little sportscars! Also I didn't know that Citroen bought them, or that they designed the Dyane. The learning curve continues! Glad everyone is enjoying these quirky cars as much as I am!

Interesting to read that the Panhard 24 pre-dated the Citroen DS!
I'll have to keep an eye on the Practical Classics one too.

Panhard et Levassor ?... Systeme Panhard (front-engine, gearbox & rear diferential) they were an oooold company ! "horseless" vehicles in 1888, unavoidable in any "history of the car" type book. Nice to hear the name still "soldiers" on. www.forum-auto.com/uploads/200511/roulax_1132226508_typa_1898_grosse_andern.jpg[/img]Dynamic Saw the need to downsize post war & bought into Jean Grégoire's AFG (Aluminium Français Grégoire) Dyna design first exhibited in 1946. became the Panhard Dyna X Always liked the aero-styled Panhard Dyna Z, 1954 Shame the scrapers must have loved them with all that alloy & Panhard switched to steel floorpan so they could offer a cabriolet version & cut costs for the PL. The lightweight alloy must have helped popularity for sporting offerings like the Panhard-based Deutsch Bonnets & their competition success. Obviously market competition must have been tough since their product can't have been that cheap, Dyna & PL were FWD 610-850cc air-cooled flat twin so comparisons to the Citroen 2cv would be hard to avoid!

Panhard are one of those marques that desrves much more recognition than it gets. I love this pic of a '55 Dyna Junior, people always say a frogeye Sprite has a face, but this runs it pretty close (with a little help ) I knew I heard of them before, they make small tanks and armoured cars!! On a little tangent, other former automobile manufacturers that are involved in miltary/aerospace: www.hispano-suiza-sa.com/index.php?&lang=enwww.messier-bugatti.com/sommaire.php3?lang=en (that's the REAL Bugatti, not the car firm owned by VAG that has the rights to use the name)
