I bought the Sceptre on ebay last August, but I've found that I don't have the time to do anything with it at the minute, plus it's not really 'me'. Mechanically it's sound, the previous owner told me that the it had had a recon auto 'box and it had a new radiator in March 09 at a cost of £159. I have fitted new plugs, points, condenser and air filters. It will need a new battery, it would start with a jump start but hasn't been run for a few months. It has a new alternator. When I bought it was suffering from the usual Rootes problem of the paint inside the fuel tank flaking off and blocking the pick-up pipe, so I removed the tank and gave it a good clean out and fitted a gauze strainer over the pick-up, this cured the problem.
As far as the bodywork goes it's not too bad, it's had a fair bit of patch welding, but it's 42 years old... I think it's had new sills and wheel arches, and I would think it's had new wings at some point as there's no rot or filler around the headlights were they usually go. It has obviously been resprayed, it's not the best job ever but it's not that bad. There is shallow dent in the O/S wing (should pop out) and a small patch of flaking paint/rust. There is a small area of damage on the rear O/S corner and and an area of flaking paint on the scuttle. The biggest problem on the body is the area of the closing panel of the N/S sill. To get to this to repair it I cut a piece about 6” deep from the wing. Unfortunately I only got as far as cutting out the rot and welding a patch on the inner sill (and to be honest I was in a rush, it could do with grinding off and starting again). If anyone wanted to drive it away the section of wing could be re-attached with self-tappers as a temporary measure. There is also a patch on the inner wing that needs grinding off and re-doing as there is hole next to it. The trim between the reversing lights is missing as is the boot lid trim. The sill trims are also missing, no wheel arch trims are fitted but I have 2 sets.
The interior needs some work, the driver's seat has a spilt in it and there are no carpets in the front. The dash and door cappings have been badly re-varnished. The headlining needs a clean but there are no tears as far as I can remember. The rev counter has a mind of it's own. Sometimes it doesn't work at all, other times it reads twice the actual revs, or a random reading.
There are some spares with it as well, front brake hoses, throttle cable, oil filter, 3 doors, boot lid, heater assembly and some other bits and pieces. Plus a factory workshop manual.
And how it could look...
