I mentioned this car several times in conversation over the course of the Retro Cars show, for those that don't know of it, here it is: There aren't too many cars like this...built by a genius - an engineer with the flair of a customiser. A car that doesn't fit into the scene around it...but still takes that scene by storm. There's others too: Tom Radford's Rover SD1: Brian Burrow's 993 Squareback. John Beardmore's Minor: Me? I'd have to do what Brian (Burrows)did and have others build my dream for me...mine would be under a Herald estate body with a 928 drivetrain. What would yours be? www.bryanf.com for inspiration. Set some time aside.

Love BB's Squareback... it just Rocks...
They all rock in their own special way though!
Unfortunately, my ULTIMATE car came out of the factory perfect, and I wouldn't wanna mess with perfection....
yep - predictably the Short Sport quattro... Spot on,
but then If I had to, maybe i would get someone to shoe-horn the running gear from an Audi RS2 (so's it stays Inline-5 and suitably retro!) into an old Passat, or similar?!? FUN!

Where do I start?!? I like the idea of a Skoda Rapid with Porsche 959 oily bits, preferably in "cardboard box beige" and looking totally standard... I saw an FSO Estate at the scrapyard which got me thinking about dropping in a mental engine - Fiat twink is an obvious one but maybe something like a big Jag supercharged lump would be more unusual! Building cars in my head is one of my favourite passtimes! I would love to shoehorn a 6.9 litre Mercedes unit under my bonnet, but I doubt I'll ever find one (still searching for a big V8 to transplant though!)

You build cars in your head too? I spent about a week once daydreaming about a six wheeled, Ford 305 V8 engined Ford Anglia pickup! My current daydream whenever I'm bored is a road legal, tube chassis'd Trabant with a full rally spec Vauxhall Chevette suspension and brakes etc, Vauxhall XE engine, Ford Type 9 gearbox, full race interior (buckets and harnesses etc...) and to top it off some nice drab paint and wide but subtle steel wheels so that it looks dead standard until you get up close. 8-)NICE

That Rover is very, very special. I've seen it before... Hmm. I go through phases - I'll suddenly decide on a car that I really, REALLY would love, obsess over it for a couple of weeks, build it in my head, and then wake up one morning wanting something else... That's why I'll never have any for real Recent obsessions have included: * Cortina Mk4 Estate with 2.9 Cosworth Scorpio running gear, in either brown or that metallic red they did them in * E21 BMW 323i, earlier the better, with the little chrome mirrors and stuff - in either a dark metallic or bright acid green with the full euro-stance and (utlimately) E30 M3 running gear * Morris Minor Traveller with either a K-Series or Vauxhall twin cam powerplant (incidental question: why does no-one use the VW 16v for transplants? Like in my Golf? Probably because there aren't the tuning bits?) My current one is the red Fiat 128 that's for sale in the back of the very latest Retro Cars for £1000... Nice and red, and sounds in mint condition too. Ooooh, lowered on some wide rims with a nice tyre stretch, wonder what lump would fit in there...

Nice to see Radfords Rover again. I remember it from the Dutch House meets on the old A20 from years back. In the metal it was really amazing, the level of detail engineering was breathtaking even then. Where is it now?

Yeah, pink. It was the late eighties/early nineties. Still, it stood out! It was kinda 7/8 size, shortened tube frame but full width I think. Just mad.
